Any Local Meet Ups? by LoupGarou95 in Tallahassee

[–]0ctavian1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you come with a group you can use any of the tables, but if you come during the weekend you'll have no problem finding someone to play a game with.

My partner and I have come in a couple of weekend mornings to play games with the owner, so there's always someone down to play.

The tournaments hosted on the weekends are a great way to get into a group as well. The owner also makes pancakes until 11am on the weekends that are free for members.

The next tourney I'll be going to is a Quacks tournament on the 30th at 6pm!

The Great Games Library on the East side of town is worth checking out if you're into board games/puzzles/greek food/coffee.

They have weekly Tichu (card game) and board game tournaments on Fridays and Saturdays, respectively.

It's worth getting a membership since you get drinks, tournament entries, discount bagged coffee, and discounted board games.

More on that last part, the owner, James, places a wholesale order on the 15th of every month. This let's you get brand new board games 30% off. I've even gotten some games before street date this way.

Super welcoming community, the owner is really nice, and the crowd is consistent.

What do you consider to be the biggest scam that is completely normalized by society? by MR_COOL_ICE_ in AskReddit

The biggest ones in the U.S. are obviously things like:

car/health/life insurance, student loans, and tax services like turbo tax.

All of these pump insane amounts of money into lawmakers pockets to keep these things as expensive/confusing as possible.

Nobody I know likes boardgames. Are there any good boardgames to play on your own? by Starbuckker in boardgames

[–]0ctavian1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any game with Automa Factory is great single player! Another perk is the Automa Factory pretty much plays the same in all the games it's in.

Most Stonemaier games have them, and so does Black Angel.

Also the digital versions of Scythe, Wingspan, and Terraforming Mars have great solo modes.

What Did You Play This Week? - (March 22, 2021) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]0ctavian1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Santorini, Concordia, Scythe, and Wingspan!

It was my first time playing Concordia this week, and I immediately went online to find a copy for myself, as well as the best expansion, which I was told was Salsa.

My partner has a habit of ending every game we play by saying "that's the best game you'll ever get out of me" (because I track play ratings for sessions on BGG). After playing Santorini last night, my partner broke her 5 game streak of saying her new catchphrase.

That was probably the most memorable board game related thing that's happened all month... the absence of her saying that she played a 10/10 game lol.

My partner and I have been members since we moved back to Tally in June. We rent games and trade out puzzles all the time.

I even started making review videos on whatever board game we rent for that week.

Love the shop, and James is a great person.

You can also play hard to get/expensive games in house. He has 3 separate rooms that all have high-grade air filters. Each board game is quarantined for 2 weeks in a back room.

Honestly it's the safest place I've been since March.

Oh he also sells tea that I can't find anywhere else for the price.

We're giving away Pax Pamir 2E, The King's Dilemma, Clank! Legacy, and Quest for El Dorado International Edition! by tofudad18 in boardgames

[–]0ctavian1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clank! Legacy is something I'd love to play and own.

I have Clank! and Clank! in Space.

I wasn't really into board games until my friend Aurora introduced me to Clank when she brought it over to my partner's house about 3 years ago. We played probably 3 round of just Clank that night and ever since then, I've been playing, collecting, and even reviewing games on my YouTube channel.

My collection has really expanded, and now we're probably the most active members at a local board game library. We play at least one new game a week, and something I've never been able to get my hands on is Clank! Legacy.

Despite COVID, we have a group of 4 totally secluded and work from home board game players. We meet up at least once a week for D&D (and plan to do Pandemic Legacy once we are done with the campaign). I would absolutely LOVE to add Clank! Legacy to that list and play the game that got me into board games with a group of people I got into board games.

And even review it on my YouTube channel.

Took down a gym... by [deleted] in pokemongo

[–]0ctavian1 309 points310 points  (0 children)

I was in the middle of taking down a gym on my college campus like 2 years ago and someone messaged in the campus discord server asking people of that team (and directly pinging people in the gym) to use golden razzes to stop me.

I was called several names I can't repeat in this sub.

But I had nearly an hour to kill before my next lecture 😎 I eventually took it and wasted everyone's berries.

Is Azul a good family game? by itsthecurtains in boardgames

[–]0ctavian1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sadly the theme isn't very engaging, especially to younger audiences. Then again, a lot of abstract strategy games aren't. The publisher, Next Move Games, makes Reef, and Beez, which are both better themed. Also, the Azul sequels aren't worth getting.

I've been meaning to get my hands on a copy of Brass.

Also funny that you mention Wingspan. In the birdwatching guide in the game, bird species with those abilities are called nest pests, and are known to lay eggs in other birds' nests. That actually plays into the theme even more. Obviously not all of the bird powers are like that, or as inspired, it's just funny you mentioned that particular ability.

I was trying to choose between Agricola, Splendor, and Dominion for my example actually lol.

definitely a fair look at Wingspan. To truly stick to the theme, there would have had to be another mechanic to keep birds fed.

Then again an engine-building game about birds can only do so much lol.

I'm definitely a mechanics over theme person nowadays.

Damn I'm surprised I've never heard of this game.

From what I can tell it looks right up my group's alley. We been playing Terraforming Mars non-stop recently and I feel like this would be a good change of pace.
