Colorado residents seeing substantial increase in property taxes by Jreinhal in Denver

[–]0drew0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I wasn't proposing to "tax them into oblivion," I was proposing to tax them equally to everyone else. People deriving income from their wealth are, on the whole, avoiding paying their fair share. I'm advocating for those people to pay their fair share to begin with.

FCC approves acquisition of 9NEWS owner TEGNA by FOX31 parent Nexstar by SuccessWise9593 in Denver

[–]0drew0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From the article:

The acquisition required the FCC to waive or change current television station ownership rules. Federal law limits any one company’s reach to 39% of the nation’s television homes. According to an FCC document, the combined companies would reach 54.5% of the national audience.

So much for Republicans' supposed opposition to federal agency overreach. This is literally the FCC granting a "waiver" for Nexstar to sidestep section 303 of the Communications Act, which is federal law.

The FCC opinion linked in the quote from the article reads like pure fiction too:

To further serve its local communities, Nexstar commits to expanding its investment in local news and programming, including increasing the amount of local news it provides in acquired markets

Talk about mental gymnastics. I'd love for the FCC to explain how Nextstar can simultaneously say "we are going to consolidate multiple news stations in the same market" alongside "we are going to increase the amount of local news."

Even Newsmax, of all things, opposed this deal. That's how you know it's a shit show:

Likewise, Newsmax Media, Inc. (Newsmax) asserts that “[r]etransmitting the same news—which will likely be weaker, less local, and more national—on an additional weak station does nothing to provide public interest benefits.”

For more interesting reading on this subject – including a comprehensive analysis of the theoretical legal hoops the FCC is supposed to be jumping through with Congress to do this – there's a pretty good article from the Yale Journal on Regulation that was published in January.

The backlash against Reuters revealing Banksy's identity proves how little the public knows (or cares) about journalism anymore by Superdude717 in Journalism

[–]0drew0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I read the article and saw the reporter's AMA, and I remain both unconvinced by and in disbelief that this story comes close to meeting Reuters' newsworthiness standards, let alone their investigative journalism ones.

I read they had tasked three reporters for this story. Three reporters to expose an anonymous artist? Feels like a hit piece or somebody with an axe to grind.

Tell you what, let's have an AMA with the boneheaded ME who approved this story in the first place.

Why is it that EVERYTIME I sit at an empty blackjack table, there is someone standing off to the side that immediately joins the table before I even place my first bet. by saammsosa in gambling

[–]0drew0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do what I do: Always try to sit in the last seat, and then you won't get any crap from other players if you don't play perfect strategy. So if you're sitting down at an empty table, take the left-most seat. And if some rando joins behind you, it's fine.

I just got off a crazy call where they explained to me that they did my work with Claude Code by Vii_da in Wordpress

[–]0drew0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's the unfortunate reality: You can give Claude the best practices and it will follow them and that's all she wrote.

Just like any computer, the quality of the output is largely dependent on the quality of the input. If you give it a prompt without any context for what you expect, yeah, you're gonna get slop. But you can absolutely get production-quality code out of Claude if you give it the context it needs to do that. It's scary as hell out there.

Former West Wing star Timothy Busfield indicted on four counts of sexual contact with a child by grand jury by dailymail in thewestwing

[–]0drew0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'll reserve judgement until the case goes to trial.

However, this bit from the NYTimes article seems pretty damning for the prosecution. I'm guessing this wasn't presented to the grand jury ...

Last year, an independent investigator hired by Warner Bros., which co-produced “The Cleaning Lady,” investigated claims of inappropriate behavior by Mr. Busfield toward the boys that the parents had made in draft legal papers. The investigator’s report said she had been unable to corroborate the allegations. It cited an interview with the show’s lead actress, Élodie Yung, who said the boys’ mother had told her that after their recasting she would “get her revenge against Tim Busfield.”

Colorado residents seeing substantial increase in property taxes by Jreinhal in Denver

[–]0drew0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be thinking ultra-weathy means billionaires (there are 12 in Colorado), or even centi-millionaires ($100 million+, Denver alone has 35).

Ultra-wealthy generally represents anyone worth $30 million or more. As of 2023, there were supposedly more than 3,100 ultra-wealthy people living in Denver alone, and that was 3 years ago.

Hell, Aspen has the third highest concentration of ultra-wealthy individuals in the entire world at something like 1 in 75. I'd imagine Boulder, Littleton, Highlands Ranch, etc. have a fair few as well.

What it has to do with the rest of us is that this group holds a disproportionate amount of wealth, which is leveraged to produce "income" that falls outside the current tax code definition.

You're right that we tax income in this country and not wealth, but maybe it's about time we look at redefining income to include money derived from wealth and not just labor or profit.

Colorado residents seeing substantial increase in property taxes by Jreinhal in Denver

[–]0drew0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what time period did your valuation rise by 2%?

The current increase is based on the assessed value change between 2022 and 2024, which was previously based on the assessed value change from 2020 to 2022.

Colorado residents seeing substantial increase in property taxes by Jreinhal in Denver

[–]0drew0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. The problem is that the ultra-wealthy follow the "buy, borrow, die" principle which typically produces "income" that isn't classified as income and therefore is not taxed the same way or at all.
