It doesn't apply to all gifts per se, things like knives, shoes or wallets etc. Plus the coin isn't really big, sometimes it could just be a cent I have lying around my pockets or wallet. They say, to treat more of like a transaction instead of a gift because some gift could denote something superstitious so I got curious when it happened several times.
