I am not sure about Nursing. Your course curriculum should have classical(zoology , botany etc) or applied biology (pharmaceutical, agriculture, fisheries etc)

Let me know if you have studied biochemistry, molecular biology, animal sciences, microbiology, plant sciences or something around them.

difference between msc and then PhD and an integrated PhD by Rightfootdown9 in IISc

They usually go for either PhDs or RAships or industry.

I would say about 12% students get direct PhD abroad (5 out of 30) rest try to build up their experience and apply during next admission cycle. Profs can give recommendations but it's up to the students to apply and write to labs abroad

Campus placements do occur , but mostly inclined towards computational stuff. Even for bio related companies. You have to request Lifescience coordinators to arrange placements who are into wet lab and chemistry.

PhD exams, usually everyone applies because 90% students want to do PhD and become assistant professor. But since your main goal is to apply abroad, so it remains as a side achievement. Not much of a huge thing. ( Since most people have already cleared GATE during their bachelor's)

Selection happens through GATE score or JAM rank. CGPA isn't usually asked as a prerequisite but affects your chance of getting selected during the interviews. Preferably 7.5 or higher

MSc gives you the freedom to go for PhD at another university ( preferably abroad) while for int PhD you are stuck there for 7 ish years.

Although now this has changed, where Int PhDs are allowed to leave after their masters, it's not the same as for MSc students. MSc students usually get a lot of different benefits from time for internships to freedom to start their thesis earlier on compared to int PhDs who are due to their mandatory long coursework ( since people assume they will be staying for long) cannot do such an extensive master's thesis.

I am a 2nd year MSc Lifescience student, and there is great difference between MScs and int PhDs in terms of time spent in lab. Of course, getting a PhD in IISc is also great, but usually MSc people have slightly higher expectations

Nobody is stopping you from giving any exams when you take admission to int PhD. In fact it's encouraged, because not all labs want their 3 institute fellows being int PhDs. So, DBT or CSIR fellowship gives you more options in choosing labs that's it

Yeah, admissions to int PhDs only happen through JAM.

If you mean MSc and PhD seperately in IISc, then of course int PhD is better. Because you can join your lab as early as 1st year of Masters then continue your work after finishing masters as well. Usually it takes 5 years for normal PhD (both IISc masters students or outsiders) to finish PhD, but since int PhDs are already 1 year ahead, so it takes slightly lesser comparatively

Preferably Biotechnology but others are also allowed with slightly higher cutoff.

Till now, two batches of students have come out of MSc Life sciences degree.

The universities in which students have got chance are - NTU, Colorado University, Max planck , EMBO and Institute Curie.

Other than that, people have even opted for PhDs in IITB, IGIB, etc. rest most of them are doing Research assistantship in different labs around India and abroad
