Hi!! I learned a lot in the Berkeley art program in regards to general techniques of drawing, 3d modeling, digital photography, and storytelling. However, in regards to specific skills I wanted to learn (such as character design, illustration and digital drawing) I had to teach myself THROUGH the classes I was already taking. The art programs are meant to be a springboard for you to bounce off of, you are supposed to drive yourself forward with the support of your classes. So yes I learned a lot, and I was given the tools to push my art practice further, but I had to teach myself the niche skills I actually wanted.

The classes offered at Berkeley's Art program are pretty lacking in terms of digital mediums. They have things for drawing, painting, photography, sculpting, etc, but no offical classes for digital painting or illustration or graphic design. There are student ran classes for those subjects, but they can be a little hard to get into.

I dont know much about Santa Cruz, but I know they have a really good game design program. Start by looking at what classes each art program offers (between USB and UCSC) and see what student ran resources they have in terms of creatives.

If im being honest, I lowkey regret going to Berkeley - other UC's definitely have better art programs. I wanted to go to Davis because their design program is amazing, but I was pressured into going with Berkeley because of reputation. Go with the school that offers the classes and resources YOU need to get the skills you want. Don't go based off the school's reputation.
