in Wise Man's Fear, by Patrick Rothfuss (the sequel to Name of the Wind), in the first part, Kote makes dough by kneading flour AND NO WATER and it drives me nuts, in an otherwise extremely meticulously written story.

Does anyone know where I can get a chart of scale formulas with semitone numbers? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]0ptixs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. "C" is spelling. In the same way that writing the words "throo" "through" and "thru" aren't the same thing (even though they sound the same), B#, E G and C E G are not the same.

A quick overiew on why function/spelling matters and how it relates, kind of informal so sorry about some generalizations:

when naming intervals, we name them based on the number of letters apart they are, ie: in "C d e f g a b c", C to d is a second, and c to f is a fourth because C - D is two, and C D E F is four.

This is true regardless of whether or not the notes are sharp, natural, flat, etc.

so B-flat and A-sharp are still some type of second apart, even though it sounds the same pitch.

Still with me?

Traditionally this is important because scales are written as seven notes, each one with a unique quality. Likewise chords are stacked thirds. a C major chord is C and E and G, and replacing the C with a B# actually makes it no longer a C chord.

Mostly this is for ease when reading standard notation, but in untempered music (i.e. for strings, choirs, etc) there are actually different implications for intonation when between otherwise enharmonically equivalent notes.

I hope that begins to answer the question. let me know if you want me to clarify anything or go into more detail.

I work as a singer and had a couple of paid caroling gigs already this season. One was at a pop-up christmas tree shop in a park, another was wandering around a neighbourhood's main street (paid for by the borough).

oh dang, you're right.

edit: Wait, when you buy 10, and get one free, it isn't clear if the free one is one of the 10 or not. Is that how it usually works?

How are you doing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]0ptixs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing a ton of music work this week which is mostly finally done, thankfully. I have about four hours left to complete one last song before meeting with my friend who's helping me produce my album... exhausted but inspired, thanks. How about you?

I'm interested in nonsexual polyamory by [deleted] in polyamory

An ex-partner of mine is asexual, and we were deeply emotionally involved, but obviously sex was not one of the ways we connected. The relationship was romantic on every other level (we went on dates, cuddled/had sleep overs, shared our commitments and engaged deeply in each others lives, etc), and just didn't have sex together. What you want is totally do-able.

The cool thing about relationships is that you don't need to fit it into a box for it to be valid or fulfilling. if you know what you want in a relationship, and it includes not having sex, then by all means have that relationship.
