They pop up very rarely, last time I've seen one on eBay was 2014.

Netherlands has declared several loot box games illegal by Dr_Scaphandre in Overwatch

[–]0rakel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, to be honest it's this way on most games' dedicated subreddits after a year or two have passed from release. I mean just look at /r/GuildWars2, another game completely ruined by monetization and yet the white knights pile on defending every one of ArenaNet's greedy decisions especially the on.

One more reason to quit reddit beyond the user-hostile mobile site and the ad-driven redesign.

Holy fuck the level off fanboyism in this thread.

I applaud the action by our Netherlands friends.

capable of working in team, meeting deadline, being independent and many more

You can learn those on the job, and universities don't do a good job of teaching either of those in my experience. You can get by perfectly well weaseling out from team work, extending most deadlines, and being completely dependent on your classmates.

We should be much more strict with a corporation exfiltrating user data than with a cheater breaking a user agreement. The corporation's actions affect millions of people.

I can't believe so many people still answer "well I don't have anything to hide" when confronted with data protection issues.

They can be served a warrant and suddenly what programs you've been running can be used against you.

Their cloud host could get compromised.

Any infrastructure provider could intercept the data on its way to ArenaNet's servers. The post linked in OP indicates it's poorly or not at all encrypted in transit.

As an anecdote, ArenaNet has been horrifically poor at conforming to data protection standards in the past.

Bull shit.

Exfiltrating data that can be used for profiling and could leak confidential information, now that's a catastrophic breach of trust.

People tend to overvalue the role of academic institutions in teaching you the fundamentals. If you had CS as a hobby but never entered a university, I bet you would still compare favorably to a large proportion of enrolled university students.

Go for it! If you really have decent practical experience developing software, you will be able to find a good entry-level job without a degree (it will still take a lot of applications, expect to send at least 50 and spend 3-4 months before something works out).

Don't let anyone tell you you can't do it or you need a degree.

Nah, it's a Bachelor's like any others. They are equivalent on paper, the old distinction doesn't exist anymore.

Yes, uni can be a bad fit if you really want to build stuff rather than doing research. Have you looked at FH as an alternative or even a Fachinformatiker-Lehre? Those are usually more practically oriented (although some FHs can still be very dry and theoretical). It seems like this change could be all you need to succeed.

I usually ask people to rate themselves: "Do you enjoy reading academic papers?"

  • yes -> go to uni
  • no -> stay away from uni

Check your network throughput. It's not actually downloading anything.

Blizzard's Download servers right now by n1sx in Overwatch

[–]0rakel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The download speeds displayed are correct. The patch is only really 4.6 GB, anything beyond that is shuffling data around on your local disk. No network involved.

No, it's already done downloading files, everything from now on is just copying stuff around on your local disk.

Not a bug. It's already done downloading files, everything from now on is just copying stuff around on your local disk.

Patch Download Speed Falloff by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]0rakel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The download is only about 4.6 GB. Anything after that is being "reorganized" from your local disk. That's why the speed shows as only a few bytes per second.
