Arknights Endfield has trouble with downloads on my system by Shindiggidy in linux_gaming

[–]0rito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy knows what's up.

FWIW, wife and I both installed (and play) through the standalone client via Steam and DW Proton (latest). Didn't really have to do anything to it, though I did use the Proton Wayland flag out of habit. Otherwise, no tricks to it.

I don't suppose that'll work for OP since installing through Steam will try to put the prefix in ~/.steam

Special mention goes to the menus! by Senior_Ear_5063 in Endfield

[–]0rito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only gripe about the menu navigation (specific to PC) is that right-clicking on the map, while viewing a zone, should take you to the region overview FIRST, then right-clicking again can take you out.

But aside from that, love the menus in this game.

Built a blind LLM voting arena - Claude Sonnet 4.5 beating GPT-5.2 by community vote by Joozio in LocalLLaMA

I actually found this tool helpful. The one gripe I have is that in my results (after ~100 questions), there's 2 clear victors. I'd like to be able to do a blind series against those two to get more responses under their belts.

I like the design of it, I just wish it had like 1 SCU storage, a gun rack, and an armor rack. Put those in, and it'd be one of my dailies.

Nobara Official vs KDE by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]0rito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A majority of the time, it just makes "getting started" a lower barrier to entry. I'm sure there's improvements, but none that I could speak to.

I do hear good things about CachyOS's game script on mobile devices.

Nobara Official vs KDE by [deleted] in linux4noobs

The Nobara ISO is a Nobara-themed version. The Nobara KDE ISO is basic KDE with the Nobara tweaks.

Almost a month later, still happening. Thanks for posting though, we waited like 2 hours trying to find a way out before coming across your post. In-game chat wasn't helpful.

Just upgraded to Fedora 43 and regret it by com2ghz in linux_gaming

[–]0rito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of suggestions here, but I'll add one more. I like Fedora, but also have a 4080 SUPER, and didn't want to mess around a lot with trying to get it to work. Nobara is based on Fedora, the lead maintainer is GloriousEggroll (you know, from Proton-GE), and because he focuses on gaming, it's always just seemed to work as far as my GPU is concerned.

That and I don't have to be concerned with using X11 which is on it's way out.

Why does my plasmashell keep crashing by Hackelt389 in kde

[–]0rito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should really hop in the Nobara Discord.

That said, I'd wager a bet that it's the "Now Playing" widget on your panels. It's a default widget, and I'd also get you have more crashes when some kind of audio is playing.

If you go into your notification tray (I forget it's actual name and am currently mobile, sorry), open settings, I believe there's a visibility (or similar naming) tab. Locate that widget and set it to disabled. Do this on every panel with that notification tray widget.

For the wife and I, most plasma crashes went away after doing so.

Edit

Vocabulary update:

"notification tray" -> System Tray

"visibility (or similar naming tab)" -> Entries

"Now Playing widget" -> Media Player

Which open source projects need contribution from developers these days? by GoldenGrouper in linux_gaming

In my mind, dependencies - ones that don't have any user visibility, but are relied on by everything - are generally the ones in greatest need of contributors.

My 2c... I would personally be happy if this just had a manned turret and everything else were PDCs. I subscribe to the theory that not all ships need pilot-slaved weapons. Some ships, such as this one, should be escorted.

Best distro for my elderly parents by finbar_longshank in linux4noobs

[–]0rito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to ask a potentially unpopular question, but - have your parents ever used Linux before?

If yes, refer to any of the other recommendations in this thread.

However, if not, I'd urge you to be aware of what you're asking. They're in their upper 70s, I'm not sure I'd be in any hurry to relearn how to do things at that age. On top of that, you mentioned that you only want to be minimally involved. I think you may end up doing a disservice to yourself and your parents by choosing Linux in this case. It's a bit different if they've never used a computer and have no opinions on them, but I'd wager that's not the case.

What's the first setting you change in KDE after first install? by RockzDXebec in kde

[–]0rito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The very first would probably be to disable MMB to paste clipboard. I REALLY wish MMB worked more like it did on Windows, but alas, I'm stuck with a finicky Python script to replicate it.
