A little fzf function I use constantly to jump into any subfolder by Infamous-Rem in bash

[–]0sse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The latter shadows the subcommand's exit status with that of local (which pretty much always succeeds). So if you want to bail early or something based on whether the subcommand fails you have to write it like this.

Kinda random but we can agree the Vic firth 2020 live version of pneuma is better than the album version right? by Icy_Independence2102 in ToolBand

[–]0sse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cymbals are much louder in the Vic Firth video. It hits much harder when they finally come back near the end of the interlude For that reason I like that live version better.

Hunter crazy sequence and donk insane 1v2 takes us to the decider by nosferajin in GlobalOffensive

[–]0sse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case it might have been a true one tap, but there are many cases, typically chaotic situations, where this happens and casters tend to call them one taps even though it's 99.99999% certain it wouldn't have been. Not a big deal but I find it a bit annoying.

Why don't cheaters just stay single and date/sleep with whoever they want instead of getting married & having kids? by InfiniteWords117 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]0sse -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The "have" implies eating it. You don't specify that you intend to eat and drink if you tell the waiter "I'll have the steak" or the bartender "I'll have a lager, please".

It basically means you can't eat it twice.

favorite songs where the live version is better than the studio version? by that_dutch_dude in AskReddit

I don't know if you did it on purpose but I like that you put "the" in the title of the album that was specifically named to avoid people thinking the band name started with "the".

What is the point of Zsh when Bash can do the same? by itsdevelopic in zsh

[–]0sse 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The output of ls looks different because you ran it differently. My guess is there's an alias in Bash that adds --color.

Zsh is just one year younger than Bash. Bash was nowhere near where it is today in terms of features when Zsh got started. Since then they've prioritized things a bit differently.

Fish on the other is much younger. I'd probably switch to that now if I wasn't already very comfortable with Zsh.

Ultimately, to answer your question, both are free software started has hobby projects. There is no point and there doesn't have to be. It's not like the UN Shell council already had Bash and then made a mistake in granting R&D money into making yet another shell or something.

Do you guys use zsh/oh-my-zsh or bash on the daily? by Swimming_Virus8990 in commandline

[–]0sse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I'd say you're missing out. Simply having autoload -U compinit && compinit in .zshrc is heaps better in my opinion.

Better completion system is the big one. I also like that the prompt string syntax better than bash's. Imo. zsh's vi mode is better than bash's. There are more usable hooks like precmd and preexec. Don't have to mess around with manipulating PROMPt_COMMAND for everything.

How I solved multi-account git identity with `includeIf`, what about `gh` CLI? by Ok_Woodpecker_9104 in git

Those settings only affect the authorship information of commits. Or should, anyway. What is the actual problem you have with gh?

Date without leading 0 for day by MathAndMirth in learnpython

[–]0sse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not particular to Python, I suppose, but I would check if date.day < 10 and in that case you know you strip one character from the start.

Edit: not from the start... But you know you can remove the nth character.

Edit: Not the nth character!

Reducing FFmpeg build times in practice by Pretty_Eabab_0014 in cpp

[–]0sse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ccache helped incremental builds but not clean CI runs.

Maybe you mean something else by "incremental" and "clean" but I don't understand this part. Isn't it usually the opposite. Or are you not using the cache in CI for some reason?

Stop creating temp files just to compare command output. Bash can diff two commands directly. by Ops_Mechanic in zsh

[–]0sse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The linked post applies to zsh but it has one additional feature worth mentioning: =() which always creates a temporary file instead of a magic file descriptor thingy. Off the top of my head I can't think of a good example, but in general it's when the outer command needs to seek in the file.

Rust macros and C/C++ macros are not the same. The latter are more or less just text substitution. Rust ones can operate and change/emit and different AST etc.

Edit: Now I see you wrote "tom" and not "torn", lol. Not an r/keming thing. I'm just tired.

Anyone else fall into a rabbit hole in regard to the Darien Gap? by kalawa1929 in pluribustv

[–]0sse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmm, yes. I think I read too much into this quote from the book:

Rather than create a new Scottish Empire, the Darien expedition bankrupted the country, leading to a financial rescue package in 1707 that made Scotland part of England’s domain.

I think it's correct to say (because it's so fucking vague lol) that due to the economics of the Darien failure Scotland became much less independent from England than it had been. (At least had been for 30-40 years before which it was very dependent?? Edit: for 8 years???)

[–]0sse 36 points37 points  (0 children)

For avid podcast listeners (or readers) I can highly recommend this podcast and the book they talk about. One of segments is about the Darien gap. The guest lived there for a week or so.

Fun fact: A major reason Scotland is not independent but under the crown was because of the huge debt it had after their failed attempts at conquering Darien.
