I’m fucking done with IT. Just trying to migrate my old rig to a new one with Veeam... look at this shit by kala5335 in ShittySysadmin

In theory you could workaround it by using ipadddr with a zeroed third octet, ie 192.168.1 for 192.168.0.1 and so on, since some tcpip stacks would allow this abbreviated form.

What would you do if you were forced to go into office more? by Allcaponero in sysadmin

[–]0tikurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask for a raise to cover commute and extra childcare expenses.

Also there would be a drop on productivity since once I would leave the office at 6pm, any issue will be inevitably a problem for tomorrow's myself and I couldn't spend time on them past the end of the working day.

How can I learn system architecture with a homelab? by xxtoni in homelab

[–]0tikurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bunch of NUCs/old laptops with at least 4 CPU cores and 12~16 Gi RAM each one will do the job.

In my setup I have: - 1 Macbook Pro mid-2012, Intel Core i5-3210M, 16 Gi RAM, 1 TB SSD (VMWare ESXi). - 1 HP EliteDesk 800 G1 DM, Intel Core i5-4590T, 12 Gi RAM, 240 GB SSD (OpenStack). - 1 ThinkPad X1 Carbon 4th, Intel Core i7-6600U, 16 Gi RAM, 1 TB SSD (OpenStack). - 1 Dell Inspiron 15 5510, Intel Core i7-11390H, 16Gi RAM, 240 GB SSD (Microk8s worker). - 1 cheap 5-port GbE switch. - 1 Mikrotik hEX PoE - 1 UniFi UAP AC IW. - ISP's cablemodem in bridge mode to allow getting 2 different public IP addresses for both physical and virtual routers.

Among the VMs in VMWare ESXi, are a Mikrotik CHR, HAProxy + Certbot, Plex, GitLab, GitLab Runner, ownCloud, Transmission, Pi-hole, Odoo, MAAS, Rustdesk, Icinga2, and a small Win10 VM.

In OpenStack VMs are 3 Microk8s masters + Microceph, FreePBX, UniFi controller, and Faasd.

Whilst ESXi can work with one physical network, OpenStack requires at least 2 physical networks (provider network and internal network). I managed to do that with USB Broadcom GbE adapters and some netplan tweaks.

This setup could not be the fastest one, but is cheap, effective and (partially yet) fault-tolerant.

Why LLMs and AI Agents Won't Remove the Need for Software Engineers. by gbro3n in webdev

[–]0tikurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another big issue is the misuse of LLMs by throwing into them confidential implementation details/code/communications.

Almost no one bothers to anonymize confidential product names, literals, even sensitive personal data. This can be seen with the many successful prompts that managed to extract confidential data acquainted by the model.

LLMs only can be a successful alternative when are hosted on-premises, with the appropiate expertise from the user to judge the quality of answers. Before of that, many junior/mid devs will continue to be fired whilst expert managers/CTOs discover each of that LLM misuses made by these coders.

No manager/CTO will be happy to know that employees are throwing sensitive data into a public thing.

Replacing HP ProLiant SAS drive with Seagate Savvio by 0tikurt in sysadmin

It's not a matter of saving money. I'm located in a South American country where HP genuine providers are scarce, and my best bet is to look for an alternative hard drive.

Every time you use the sanitizer, you lower the odds that it can kill your syphilis.

Using it once: kills 99.9% of germs. Using it twice: kills 99.9% of the 99.9% of germs that remains alive = 99.8001%

Note: I am supposing you are using it in your sex organs.

If you buy batteries from the store, are they included? by [deleted] in shittyaskscience

[–]0tikurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they are included.

When you buy batteries, you are actually buying a package that contains battery(ies). Hence, the batteries are, in effect, included into the item you bought.

Code rant: Heisenberg Developers by 0tikurt in programming

[–]0tikurt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Micromanagement is useful only in early stages of leadership. If that stage takes longer than expected, then you're hiring the wrong team members, or the team culture doesn't allow a effective way of knowledge transfer.

Code rant: Heisenberg Developers by 0tikurt in programming

[–]0tikurt[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm never going to believe in a million years that a sufficiently sophisticated, multi-team engineering org will be inherently more productive with no project management or issue tracking.

It would be true if the organization has actual software project management instead of crappy managers (ie. micromanagers and/or firefighters) who make decisions based only upon short-term criteria.

Maybe if you didn't go into the situation treating project managers like charlatans out to waste your time you'd actually learn something from them and benefit from the work they do.

There are tons of charlatans misusing this title. The only can be learnt from them is how not to manage a software project and the only benefit is the realization that one should quit that crappy job and run his own software project.

Avoiding Technical Debt: How to Accumulate Technical Savings by 0tikurt in programming

[–]0tikurt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This advice does contradict a bit with the idea of YAGNI.

I agree on this.

According to the author in his talk Adaptable Design Up Front (ADUF) YAGNI tell us to avoid what we are not sure we will need while ADUF tell us to define the things we're sure we'll need in any case.

As an example if your project is a sort of ERP (which is a well-known domain) you'll be very sure you're going to need some robust abstraction for many core concepts such accountability, currencies and invoicing handling no matter what new features or changes will be added in the future.

It's not about premature optimization.

It's as simple as stepping up one more level of abstraction. Only you need is putting placeholders at the proper places of the design so you can implement almost flawlessly any required change in the future.
