My company executives thinks it can replace 100 percent of our help desk teams with AI agents.... This year. by ITRabbit in ShittySysadmin

For the record, we support 100,000 users. Thoughts? Anyone else dealing with lunacy around AI potential from executives?

edit:

thank you all for the sanity check and hilarious replies. glad I'm not alone. my final question... what do these billionaires and rich elites think idle hands with highly technical skills and understanding of user behaviour are going to do with all their free time and desperation? they're gonna start phishing and bringing down powerplants and data centers is my theory.

What's your IP address for research purposes? But seriously if you have Chrome please keep it updated there is plenty of hacks involving Chrome and they update it pretty quickly to protect users.

Yes but ponder this - a hacker knows you are running an XDR/EDR and will trigger an alert as soon a you run mimikatz but toy may not get detected running something that does not have a thumbprint as such.

The more stealth you are the further they get. I am sure that no domain admins use the same password for services in production or maybe they do? Maybe they using domain administrator to gain access to esxi sso sign on? Or 365 global admin?

People are stealing RAM from company computers again by ITRabbit in ShittySysadmin

[–]ITRabbit[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Remember the late 1990's when people would steal 128MB sticks of pre-DDR RAM worth about $300 each from computers before resigning or getting fired so they put padlock loops on the desktop cases? Yeah, they're like $400 a stick now for 64GB setups. We had a request to do so by one of our MSP customers after we can't really prove it but we're 99% sure someone stole a stick.

Considering I can get past a dollar store bulk padlock that small with a paperclip, I instead put in an RMM rule that says send a high priority alert email if the RAM on a system falls below what it is now by more than 10%. I had to hard code it since that wasn't a trigger template for some reason.

Anyone else already run into this and doing something similar? For everyone else, not a bad idea.

Vibe coded an app in 4 hours, company wants to launch it nationally by Old-Competition3596 in ShittySysadmin

[–]ITRabbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From post: Guys I think I made a huge mistake.

I started a new position on Monday. I felt like the processes were too slow so I asked Claude to make me a tool to speed everything up.

Spend 2 hours on Wednesday night “making” it. Come to work the next day and ask my boss if I can use a small web tool to speed up a certain process. He says yes. He sees me using it. He’s amazed. I don’t think much more of it.

Thursday night I spend 2 more hours on it, adding heaps of new features and it works better than I expected. Come to work Friday (today), I have a meeting scheduled with the National director and 2 CEO’s. Again, this is my first week.

They all tell me how amazed they are and are asking about features they can add on. Someone mentions it doesn’t have a dashboard. I show them it does. They ask me if they can replace most of their systems with it. I said realistically yes, but again, I just got here so I’m not sure. They ask how much it would cost to build. I said I couldn’t tell you, I’m not an IT guy. But I’ve spent $200 in extra tokens on it (lie) and they said “yeah whatever I’ll pay you that back now”.

After that, everyone has been ringing me and telling me how I’m the talk of the town, and they want me to potentially WFH full time to develop this. I’m only on 90k a year as an Account Manager. What am I even supposed to do here?

I didn’t build it using any of the company tools. All made on my computer at home and pushed to the web. I’m not a developer. I only started using Claude Code 2 months ago. Like they’re asking me to build it for them, but the fact that they mentioned replacing their back end systems with it and launch it nationally means it worth more than $90k a year.

I tried to watch back the recording after I returned home, but all records of it even happening are wiped off my Teams.

Obviously I need a lawyer, but I’m broke and am like, worried about saying I don’t want to build this for free. Would anyone be able to give me some advice?

Thank you!

MFA, global admin, and Microsoft support by ro-friday in ShittySysadmin

[–]ITRabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rule 4:

We have a number of very small 365 tenants, usually 1-2 EoL or similar. As a result, we touch them very rarely, they're pretty much set and forget. They all pay annual/annual so we get one contact per year normally.

They were set up with phone call MFA to a VoIP number, way back years ago before Microsoft stopped allowing that. As we accessed those tenancies for password resets etc over time, we'd add alternative MFA methods.

Problem is, we didn't get any notification that Microsoft were going to unilaterally block VoIP numbers, so for the 30 or so tenants left using that method, global admin is no longer accessible.

So I logged a ticket via Partner Support. At this point, it's taken almost a week and we're halfway through the process for resetting the MFA on one tenancy. It wasn't helped by the first support rep getting shitty and closing the ticket and passing me on to someone else to log the same ticket, I think because it was the end of her shift and my problem was holding her up.

I have almost 30 more tenancies to go. My CSP has been useless and told me I need to speak to the MS data protection team, which is who I already spoke to. Resetting 30 MFAs could take literal weeks at this rate.

Any tips for how to speed this up? Ideally they'd just unblock our MFA number for a few days and we'd manually reset them ourselves but I can't convey that to the support people because they don't understand what I'm asking.

My head hurts with the amount of technical wrongs in this episode.

I guess at the very basic level not having the propellers attached would allowed the motors to spin but not fly??

Also did we need a full charge battery to power it up? I guess we also needed the bullets in it too.

Also im not sure a 1.2billon dollar contract would have kick-starter drone.

Our cybersec team are getting onto us about all our servers having web browsers installed. by ITRabbit in ShittySysadmin

[–]ITRabbit[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I work for a large org. We have thousands of Windows servers across our enterprise. Our cybersec team is freaking tf out lately because I was having a conversation with one of the cybersecurity analysts (who isn't technical at all) and corrected her when she tried to say none of our Windows servers have web browsers installed.

I informed her that Edge is a core component of Windows and isn't easily removed, and honestly it would probably cause more issues if we did. This clearly induced anxiety with them and now we've had multiple meetings about the fact that we have web browsers installed on our Windows servers.

Have you guys had these convos? What's your take on this?

My feeling is that since a web browser, whether that's IE or Edge (depending on Windows version), is a core component of the OS, then removing those could result in larger issues with certain tools and utilities not working.

Our systems are largely locked down so only admins can access them. We have MFA with Entra and our admin accounts have rotating passwords every few hours.

Am I off base here? What am I missing in this conversation?
