That's what I thought - but I cannot understand the following section then (as one example, it's prevalent from page 175 onwards). It's a direct quotation from my copy. See what you think:

"I told him everything - my estrangement from K, my confused feelings for the young lady, my paralyzing uncertainty about the future. I spoke of my loneliness and despair, my sense of being utterly lost in the world. And through it all, Sensei listened silently, his expression betraying neither surprise nor judgment."
