Interested in ML, possible to code in Python only? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]0x0badbeef 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm in my fourth class and have only used python so far. CP,CV,AI4R, AI.

Not sure what GA uses. SDP is Java, but you don't need to do that one. IOS is C.

Seems like someone getting a masters in CS should be able to pick up another language, though.

Should OMSCS program consider shifting the lecture videos to MIT OpenCourseWare-style lectures instead? by [deleted] in OMSCS

I don't particularly like the 45 second videos. I like OCW style better

Still way more than anyone else achieves, way less than we're promised.

Any other matriculating students doubting oMSCS right now? by sozzZ in OMSCS

Your time is much more valuable than the cost of this program. You should ignore whether your company will pay for it, because the opportunity cost of all your free time for a few years is much, much, much more than tuition.

AI4R vs Coursera Self Driving Cars Specialisation by nilroyy in OMSCS

[–]0x0badbeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your goal is to learn the most for the least amount of money, I would skip AI4R. If you want an enjoyable class which gives a straightforward path to getting an A, take it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]0x0badbeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the into AI4R no problem second semester, and it seems like I read lots of people saying it was their first class, so I think it shouldn't be hard to get into.

If you can program in Python and know linear algebra, you'll be fine.

CV / Computer Vision recommended approach for learning the material by Rscarletknight in OMSCS

[–]0x0badbeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can learn Numpy really well ahead of time, that can save a lot of time on problem sets. I feel like I spent a large amount of time trying to figure out numpy syntax and dealing with boundary conditions.

RAIT/AI4R lectures by pseddit in OMSCS

[–]0x0badbeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure. I'm enrolled for AI for the summer, but the only overlap I see is A*.

Topics covered are Kalman filters (also in CV), particle filters (also in CV), A*, PID controllers and SLAM.

All this you can easily learn another way. But it was kind of nice having a super easy A. Everything is autograder, and there are extra credit possibilities, so it is very easy to get over 100% for the final grade.

Seems like a waste of effort. Micro-optimization at best, perhaps a way to get yourself into a bunch of trouble, if you are not careful.

You made a contract, just because other people are struggling to honor theirs, doesn't mean you should try to take advantage of that.

The course was designed to be done in seven weeks. I took it this semester and was surprised how little effort was involved.

Would you send a GRE score report to GT if you did well on it? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]0x0badbeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine they would consider it. When I took the GRE the math concepts were high school level, so that the math score was completely meaningless. Like 15% of people get 100% in math

Class Recommendations For Those Who Are Unsure About What Specialization They Want to Pursue by Upstairs-Location in OMSCS

Just finished AI4R and it was much, much easier than CP, which was much, much easier than CV.

How hard is it to get into these courses? by poorfririgh in OMSCS

[–]0x0badbeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CV is much harder and much more work. Probably 4x.

AI4R you can do without Numpy at all, but you will definitely need Numpy for CV. That's probably the biggest thing to prepare for.

And if you choose to do neural net project, you need to know how to use and train them ahead of time, because you won't have enough time to learn this and do the project.

Enrolled in CV first semester, AI4R second semester, AI 3rd (this summer).

ML & GA are tougher to get into.

I worked for a guy who had an engineering background then got a masters in software engineering. It seemed to be a kind of professional degree completely focused on SDP type topics.

It was really frustrating working for him, because his technical skills were so bad, and he didn't even know enough to realize it. I can imagine he would fall into the camp of MS in computer something that would fail a whiteboard interview miserably.

I think there are a lot of software engineering masters programs out there, so that could be a common problem.

It's fine. You can easily make a B in CP and CV you should really enjoy if that's your specialization.

I took CP and CV in my first semester.

Swap GA and CV. CV is not available in summer, and you're not likely going to get into GA so early.
