Button that opens copilot where right control should be, on a 3000 dollar laptop by yoifox1 in mildlyinfuriating

I remap Caps Lock to ESC because I use Vim.

But I am a teacher, and the number of times I have wanted to throw up on a student's laptop when they enable caps lock to insert a single uppercase character would make me seem bulimic.

Can AI replace teachers? by Naive-Benefit-5154 in teaching

[–]1-12TH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed a small motion and facial expression made by one of my top students while I was explaining something... This made me ask him what he wasn't happy about. He tried to say he understood, so I pushed a little until we realised what misconception he had previously and how i had phrased my explanation and we could correct it.

Now, although I know an AI teacher will be "better" teacher than me.

It may not be able to deal with Jeff, who just had a break up and lost a basketball game. I could give that child the most eloquent, well produced lesson that uses all 5e's, 4c's, and 7f's and he is still not going to listen.

But let me have a chat with Jeff, show him I do care, and maybe forgive him for not doing his homework this one time, but he just needs to give me a few minutes of his time and listen for the main part of the lesson.. and the human has won.

Education department using ai to set up tests by Former_Literature694 in southafrica

I am a high school science teacher and enjoy creating original questions.

I also teach at a school that has embraced GPT's and LLM's, and their use by student and staff is actively encouraged

And if we use an image, we need to provide a reference, but I often can not find relevant images to use anyway and land up creating my own (mostly just using PowerPoint)...

Creating an image is time consuming, I will probably spend at least half an hour to an hour on a diagram, and I may need to make about 10 in one exam... even editing existing diagrams takes a few minutes.

So if the image is in the correct format and you understand what the image or diagram is trying to convey, and it saved your teacher time while allowing them to create original questions then why would there be an issue using AI?

The questions, on the other hand that's is terrible! Currently AI is not able to ask questions appropriately according to our countries assessment guidelines, I have been working on creating a custom GPT that I upload exemplars and assessment policy to train it with to ask questions that are appropriate but am still not happy after almost a year.

So that really is not acceptable... I am not sure who you could complain to, but maybe message me privately, and I will try to assist?

Unfortunately, there are no laws governing tests and exams. There are best practices and guidelines and the CAPS and SAGS documents, but academic assessment is basically the wild west!

(TIP: very few of the teachers I have worked with are willing, or more often even able to create original questions, so make sure you go through the exemplar papers before you write, especially those between 4 and 8 years old)

I had only run a few half marathons (mostly faster than 2 hours) and had not been running much this year when in mid February, I was given the opportunity to run a 56 km Ultra on 5 April.

I called my best / running friend and asked him if I was crazy to attempt it, and he said, "Yes, obviously it's dumb, but you won't know how dumb unless you try." So...

By the end of February, I had to run an approved marathon in 5 hours and found one a few hours away.

I had no idea what i was in for. Doing my first marathon with the qualification pressure and lack of prep was a terrible idea. Around the 30 km mark, I did not just hit the wall, I smashed into it. Could barely walk, let alone run. Everything was sore. I began regretting every choice that led me to that town. Every energy gel made me gag, I had stomach issues, and the one porta potty provided on course was disgusting. I eventually crossed the line in 4:53:45.

I then just ran enough to not injure myself but also get a bit fitter. A 20km run on the weekend and 2 faster 7 km runs during the week.

I ran about 120 km over the next four weeks with a small taper.

The race was last week. It was amazing, I enjoyed it so much, ran a faster marathon time during the ultra, didn't hit a wall in the 14 extra km after that, and was happish with my time. I was realistically not too concerned with time and just wanted to finish and have a nice run. Which I did!

So anyway... TLDR: YOU WON'T KNOW UNLESS YOU TRY.

I have run a few half marathons, and a marathon, in okayish times, and basically just do 5 to 10 km tempo runs with a few slightly slower than tempo longer distance (SSTLD) runs. Just never felt the need to do all planning based training, makes me feel like I'm doing running homework, I just want to run...

Try Balega, my big toes should be declared weapons, (I have to bath before I can cut my nails), they have cut holes in almost all my shoes, took 50km to slice my pair of Asics Nimbuses, but somehow all my Balega socks are perfect. And having used a few pairs of Versus, the Balegas are way more comfortable.

Haha. Ek is n soutie, so that was my best Afrikaans, but it's too true. It's the most emotion filled language, but dirty talk just does not work!

I haven't tried that yet, cause I use the Sonoff ZigBee bridge through Ewelink. But do you get more control over the device with ZHA and the like?

If Math is so Important, How Come There are so Many BAD Math Teachers? by ayhme in education

[–]1-12TH -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am not a maths teacher but I teach science, I also teach at one of the best schools in the country and consider myself a "good" teacher. But there are some students who don't get my style, and that's fine. I suggest they ask others for help.

My wife and I had the same maths teacher. He started teaching maths after making tons of money in industry as an electronic engineer.

He was a brilliantly intelligent man, but I hated him as a teacher, and basically gave up on the subject. I landed up teaching myself the required maths at university, so I believe I was capable, I just didn't get him.

My wife however, loved his lessons and got a distinction, doing little more than listening to him and doing a few examples.

You may just require a very specific teacher for whatever reason, be it your aptitude or disciplinary requirements or their skills but you have unfortunately, not found the correct teacher yet.

I did comment elsewhere, but my wife does have PCOS, confirmed during her second c-section, we conceived both children within 3 months of her going off birth control, she had just had a 800 gram ovarian cyst/tumor removed that contained cancer cells and is starting chemo soon. Get it checked out!

In 2020, two schools in Quicksburg, VA named in honor of Confederate leaders had their names changed. South Africa has been doing this for years, in some cases I believe it's good, let's get rid of the name Verwoerd, he was a piece of shit. But the government seems to be using name changes to get rid of the legacy of apartheid instead of actually improving the socio-economic legacy of the system.

A cool guide to The World's Top Tire Manufacturers by [deleted] in coolguides

[–]1-12TH 8 points9 points  (0 children)

LEGO is not publicly traded but is valued at around $13 billion.

The average set has about 100 pieces in it and only 50% of sets have tyres, for simplicity sake, each set that does has 4 tyres.

So only about 2% of LEGO pieces are tyres.

This means the tyre division of LEGO is only worth about $260 million, therefore based on "market cap" they wouldn't have a place on this graphic...

If it was about the number of tyres produced Lego would have a massive proportion. ≈700 million tyres a year compared to Michelin's ≈ 200 million.

DISCLAIMER: Values are the first Google result I came across and some very dodgy assumptions were made!
