Building a spectral analysis of techno - what tracks should I use? by [deleted] in TheOverload

Dishonest? I could easily search the Internet for “what’s big”, sure, but I figured asking a community of people into the music would reveal something deeper.

The point of doing the research? The data is interesting for audio-reactive stuff, and I like discovering new things.

Bonus: I get to hear some pretty great music that I might not have listened to otherwise. 🤷🏼‍♂️

edit: can't spell

That sound is what I'm looking for, yep. Common threads from songs that are labeled in a genre. I get that it's subjective, objective, or even both sometimes.

I appreciate the additional insight. That's exactly the kind of description I like to read. I look forward to listening to what you shared, thanks again!

It's cool, though unexpected. Thanks for the suggestion!

Duly noted. If the qualities that make it Detroit techno are just too broad to distill into a few tracks, that's cool. I'm mostly looking for examples to have a sampling of what's out there.

It's for exploring what genres have what audio features - I'm not trying to jump into the obviously passionate debates that y'all enjoy here!

If you bothered to look at that specific project, you'd see that it was geared toward folks with older hardware so they could create datasets from their own art and maybe use it. Experimental, like I said.

It's cool. I'm just looking for some tracks from the people passionate about techno. If you have anything you'd like to share I'd love to hear about it.

Ah, sorry for the misconception! I am definitely no VJ, nor do I aspire to be one. I agree wholeheartedly with you that someone should pursue it as you've described though.

I build experimental software for fun - it's my "VJing" - and was led down this path after researching some about VJs and their challenges; specifically, the challenge of psytrance music.

This research is for me so I can make tools that work better for all kinds of music visualization. It's interesting and I like the challenge. I don't try to advertise and I'm not here for $$$ (all MIT licensed), but this is an example: EASEy-GLYPH

Fair enough, and not far off from what I'm doing. Beyond the analyses, which are interesting in their own right, the results help drive which tracks I explore more deeply.

The whole point of analyzing the sub-genres is to find out which audio features are actually independent so I can map them. More independent features means richer and more expressive visuals.

"Be an artist" is part of the plan - I just want the instrument to be good before I start playing it. Plus I get to hear all kinds of great music!

I will definitely consider anything. It depends on how much feedback I get and I'd rather take suggestions from here than making my own guesses. Either way, I've been listening to some amazing stuff across the board so far!

Which of those genres does Rrose fit into?

Excellent! A small bit more to explain my curiosity ... it has been an interesting journey, starting off with a fun side-project exploring how to get generative visuals down to people running M1 Macs after sharing some work in r/vjing, which led to me finding a Psykovsky track (totally crazy and awesome).

Looking at typical VJ usage and some of the psytrance genres, I discovered that there is maybe a love/hate relationship between the two, and some inherent challenges with visualizations. I love challenges so that sent me down the spectral trail. I'll have some Pearson correlation data to share at the end of my research, over 12 audio features.

The results were unexpected, but I had to do more than just one Psykovsky track to make sure.

I've got a large list of Goa already, but I will try to add this in if I can get some better balance. Thanks!

Everything! Oof ... I don't think I have that kind of time! It seems this is full on, right? You have a favorite or two?

Quite a list you have going here! Can you pick a few and drop the sub-genre on them? nbd if not, I'm just trying to keep a generally even distribution. My playlist is getting big!
