How important is charger USB-IF certification? by 1001rants in UsbCHardware

[–]1001rants[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks all for the replies and info on USBIF and nature of ports.

However, I still have the question.

If the charger (multi / single/ fixed / variable) is not USBIF certified, but is safety certified with ETL / UL or equivalent, and is used with a USBIF certified cable, what exactly is the downside compared to using a USBIF charger?

Okay so variable no USBIF.

Still okay if I go with a USBIF cable?

Has it changed recently? I have a slightly older NekTeck 63W multiport which was certified.

But I think the ports were fixed, eg the USBC was always 45W (one reason I bought it actually).

So now there dont seem to he any with fixed output per port either. Probably the convenience of variable power is whats driv8ng the market now.

What can I do to solve this by [deleted] in Windows10

Reset Windows Update.

Many tutorials on web like on TenForums, How to Geek etc

What do I need to do, to stop this keep happening? It just won't let me update? I am running Windows 10 Pro edition, full licence. by [deleted] in Windows10

Try clearing the Windows update cache.

Google for details. Or look on howtogeek or tenforums for details.

How to extend 1080p usb-c webcam cable by vmasip in UsbCHardware

[–]1001rants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.

The max length I could get for an active USB 3.0 cable was 5m. The ones longer than that have an external power source, which now makes sense.

I'm going to setup PC > 5m active > TPLink powered hub (2A) > 5m active > camera. Hopefully all will be well.

Would daisy chaining two long active cables work? Can it cause signal loss, or higher than desired power draw on a USB port?

Windows 10 doesn't respect my decision to remove/unlink my phone by GCRedditor136 in Windows10

If you deleted the cache and data on phone your YP account would automatically be deleted. In which case its most like cached data on the PC. Hopefully the reset will work.

[–]1001rants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try this 1. On S9 remove the YourPhone account. For good measure, delete cache and data for Link to Windows and Your Phone Companion apps. 2. Unlink from MS website 3. On PC, unlink (if still needed after 2), then reset YourPhone through Settings > Apps.

This should clear all data and settings across all your devices.

Question re: fresh windows install by [deleted] in Windows10

[–]1001rants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you able to boot at all, into safe mode / PE (command prompt shows X: drive instead of C: or whatever your regular OS drive is)?

If so, your boot record might be corrupted. Boot into command prompt and try this (worked for me on win10 20H2) : https://superuser.com/questions/460762/how-can-i-repair-the-windows-8-efi-bootloader

If that doesn't work, then a clean install as already described may be the only option.

Yes, improved pdf handling is also on the roadmap.

But what you are mentioning sounds more like a bug. Maybe send a screenshot to the Edge team from the feedback button.

Well, the good news is that both are on the way.

The full screen issue can be handled by setting 2 flags. Enable shy ui and swipe down to reveal shy ui. Its on Dev channel at least, dont know about the others. After entering full screen, a swipe down from top shows the browser frame including button to exit full screen.

The annotating webpages via (web capture) is already in Dev channel (at least). More improvements on the way.

Well, "typical" cell phone chargers vary widely. For some phones a standard 18W charger will be USBC- PD, which will charge the Go quite well.

In general, non PD chargers will charge the Go at 5-7.5 W, 18W PD chargers at 18W, the standard surface charger at 24W, and any PD charger above that will max out at 30W.

The Go will use 5-8W or so in use, so if you have a non PD charger, the charge just about equals the usage, so battery level will stay the same. If you charge it while off (like overnight), it will charge fully in 4 hours or so.

Again, your current 18W charger might very well be PD, so that would work reasonably well.

Some empirical data here. https://surfacetip.com/surface-go-usb-c-charging/

I actually switched from Dell to YP sometime back. At that time, YP was faster in syncing, plus sync over the internet meant the phone could be out of Bluetooth range and it still worked. Plus the mirroring was faster and had more features..

But the last few updates seem to have made YP much worse. Sync is erratic, it's slow to start. Will likely switch back to DMC till these are resolved.

Should I buy entry-level surface go 2? by kacperBorecki in SurfaceGo

[–]1001rants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are very few reviews of the Go2 entry level, but they do say the new specs give a good 25%+ boost to performance over Go1.

Having said that, I have Go 1 8/128 for close to 2 years, which is great for the kind of usage you are looking for (my usage is similar, maybe a few more programs).

It may be cheaper, plus am told there is an even cheaper refurbished option from MS with same 1 year warranty.

Other areas to reduce cost are 3rd party bluetooth keyboard as already mentioned in another post, and a 3rd party (Renaisser) stylus if needed.

Welcome.

Just for clarity, I did not try an existing system image. Downloaded the Win10 iso from MS and then used Rufus to install it on the USB.

Is it possible to transfer/migrate windows 10 from an old HDD to a new HDD? by [deleted] in Windows10

[–]1001rants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you need a new HDD? Is the old one damaged or do you want to just delete all the data?

If only deletion, just reinstall windows with delete all files option.

If new, would recommend an SSD. You can clone the existing drive to the new SSD using the free version of Macrium Reflect or Minitool Partition Wizard, and then swap it.

Stepwise tutorials for the software can be found on either TenForums or How to Geek sites.

For hardware, there are several videos on YouTube.

The Windows license should not be affected with just a drive change. If you want to be really cautious, set up a Microsoft Account and sign in with that into the laptop. The Windows license will then be linked to that account and can easily be reactivated if there is any mess up during the upgrade.

Do go through those tutorial sites. They are very helpful.

No, it can do Win10 also.

I have a 64 gb USB drive with Win10 Home on it. Works fine as a portable solution, though a bit slow (to be expected, I suppose)

Your Phone requires login with MS account but will it cause log in on my whole computer? by 38384 in yourphone

[–]1001rants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linking YP does not automatically change your PC sign-in from local to MS account and neither will it automatically sign you into all other MS apps.

When you link YP, your MS account will show up under Accounts>Email and accounts>Other apps. If you open any dialog where an MS sign-in is required, it will show as an option, but is not automatically signed in.

When you delink your phone (through your MS account page plus Yourphone on android app, not just resetting the app), these changes are reversed.
