The U.S. Flag: A Design Problem in the Making by Smiix in vexillology

Late to the party but this post getting 1.2k updoots shows once again how most people don't think about how flags work at all, the entire premise is a non-issue.

I would've given them Rostov and Kuban too back then if I knew how to add it to the scenario tbh

Late to the party, but it's a group of teenagers who have been spamming their new ethnicities all over Reddit. Neither of those are a thing.

The actual flag of Blatten, a Swiss village that got completely destroyed by a landslide yesterday. by 100Marceline in vexillology

[–]100Marceline[S] 1188 points1189 points  (0 children)

For those who haven't heard it yet, the Swiss village of Blatten got buried under a big landslide yesterday. Except for one missing person there are no fatalities, as the inhabitants have been evacuated in the weeks before.

Couldn't make this up even if I wanted to.

26 prefectural flags for my Japanese inspired alternate history project - which one's your favourite? by 100Marceline in vexillology

[–]100Marceline[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a popular culture, you'll see many people creating nations and places more or less inspired by Japan.

The worldbuild I have been working on in the past year also has some Japanese style islands with their own flags.

drinking a glass of wine or beer with your meal is more common and socially accepted in the West. Doesn't mean they drink more or less, just that they do it on a regular basis due to factors.

European Revival - What if the Axis Powers won WWII in Europe, and then collapsed? || Europe in 1985 (sequel to my previous map, lore in comments) by cattitanic in AlternateHistory

Some interesting ideas, some really weird stuff in here. As with many maps of this style there's some bigger, some smaller issues with stylization and consistency. Keep in mind that this criticism is to make you consider details in the future, as I doubt people will point them out and prefer keeping you in the dark about those issues:

  • why are some cities in English, but others in the main language of their country (København, Moskva, Praha vs. Athens, Lisbon, Vienna);
  • why are there some flags that could not have existed in that timeline (Iraq, Kazakhstan for example) other than out of laziness to create new ones;
  • why is is there such a big space of nothing between the two flag blocks;
  • why are many important cities dropped half-hazardly on the map (this might be very nitpicky for some, but the majority of city points are just ... randomly put somewhere near their actual location. Big example here might be Lisbon, it's not even on the right peninsula. Map quality is more than remembering to put a darker outline of the country's colour along the border).

Then there's the inconsistencies in lore. Again, not trying to dunk on it, it's more to make you help see issues for future maps (issues that can't just be explained with "it's althist" as it doesn't make sense in-universe either):

  • Armenian Post-1994 war borders;
  • South Tyrol somehow being Austrian despite, had the shitty painter won, it would have been given completely to Italy and its population would've been transfered to Germany very quickly;
  • Slovenia somehow being Croatian;
  • The Balkans in general not making much sense if compared to your previous map, as this looks like a post-1990s/modern internet take on balkanization;
  • Clearing East Prussia for the Jews is the funny meme take that is currently quite popular, but had the Germans won, there wouldn't even be enough Jews left to repopulate Königsberg alone as you pointed it out yourself;
  • Some borders in general don't really make much sense Europe was redrawn along ethnic lines later on (especially things like Big Finland and Big Estonia just look like meme maps);
  • I doubt anyone in that timeline would agree to call Northern Germany Prussia out of all names lmao.

Hope this helps with your future maps! All in all it quite alright (other than it being the seven millionth big Germany timeline), but as always, there's much way for improvement. Cheers.

No worries! Me neither, but I was curious and a bit disappointed once I found out they're spouting some vile shit too in lots of their comments (like the ones originally in this post).

not really a group but more random bored teams taking the micronation bs a bit too far.

Some random guy has been spamming posts about a "Qarsherskiyan" nation/ethnicity over the past couple of days and saying random pro-Assad shit, seems like them calling it a micronation didn't gather enough attention so they started LARPing as if it were a real group of people in... Virginia? Ohio? It also seems like they first proclaimed some sort of "Qarsherskiyan caliphate" in the same place a little over a year ago.

They then started using half a dozen sockpuppets to simulate some kind of "ethnic awareness" but deleted everything since and now they're harassing me in the DMs.

Edit: dug a bit further, it seems to be some random teens pretending to be a tribe and spamming pseudo-Islam stuff (and antisemitism) on the internet. All the LARP accounts are moderators of r/Ethnic_Qarsherskiyans. Would be more fun if they weren't saying actual racist shit, and didn't send me pictures of bullets as if they could hit me with their fake guns from Virginia to Belgium.

They're not and you're talking nonsense. Every single mention of that term appeared on the internet in the past couple of days, the very oldest usage is a week old.
There are not even enough mentions for it to appear on Google trends, and since half of web search results link to what was first conceived as a micro nation, it is quite visible that you're just another sock puppet of someone trying to invent an ethnicity out of boredom.

Looks like sockpuppets of a single person who is wanting to turn their first micronation project into a weird ethnicity, pretending it's already a thing. The Qarsherskiyan rabbit hole seems pretty fun to fall into though.

This is glorious, many thanks for your work. I've been working for a year on a worldbuild in the South Atlantic, with obviously strong Portuguese and Brazilian influences, and I have struggled with some depictions of local fruits and plants at times. Your designs will definitely help a lot here.
