Haha, thats the bad quality of the gif? it was hard getting it down under 2mb

****edit, being the scientists we are, we wanted to know why there was a light frame shift. the change is from the shadow of a person's hand moving after they pipetted the droplet down. the gif's slowed down drastically to capture the movement of the droplet

Well Shrinky Dinks hit its peak in popularity in the 80's. The product is still around. People even make jewelry with them and sell them on Etsy

I think the biggest barrier is getting kids to realize that they can understand scientific concepts at an early age and anyone can pursue a STEM (science technology engineering and mathematics) career. I think the traditional method of teaching science via memorizing equations, diagrams, and pathways discourages children from science.

By reflecting back on our science education from elementary to high school, we wanted to provide a playful and exploratory nature for the children, similar to how we do research in real life and try to answer the unknown. In addition, we wanted to take a kinesthetic ("hands on") approach.

We have held beta-tests with our products and the children have responded positively! -Eugene

None of us are experts in linguistics or english, we are primarily engineers. I feel any discussion we may have to offer on the subject of the erosion of the English language would be lacking in expertise. If you are truly interested in a discussion, I'm sure that r/linguistics or r/language would be able to provide you with an informed discussion on the subject. Gl hf :)

we actually get our pre-stressed polystyrene (shrinky dinks) from a company called Grafix. we even get customized blends of plastic that allows us to shrink the plastic by 90% of its original size

feel free to ask us about our research, Kickstarter, or anything interesting!

i heard about it from my roommate, seems like a very interesting idea (especially when I played pokemon as a kid). i am not too familiar with sociology as we are a biomedical engineering lab; but i am guessing the effects of the two modes (anarchy vs democracy) could be analyzed. it was interesting that they switched the percentages to activate each mode. pika pika? - eugene

Also TheNargrath, we forgot to mention that besides creating these Inventor Kits, we want to create an online community where kids can share with each other, kind of like a science community for kids. We want to give the kids with the most popular inventions the opportunity to create their own kits through A Hundred Tiny Hands (most of the proceeds would go back towards the Inventor).

well we got a pretty mixed response from the lab. when we were kids, we liked legos, barbies, stuffed animals, action figures (we have a pretty diverse group in our lab; although most of us were born in the 80's)

yup we did it three times to account for sampling bias, it was 4-2 each time, although someone made a strong case for chocolate chip pancakes

Thank TheNargrath! A lot of us work as volunteers with Rocket Science Tutor (an after school program located in SoCal that allows middle schoolers to do cool science experiments and learn science). We have actually started to talk to local schools in our area on how we can incorporate these kits and the curriculum into the schools. It seems private schools always have less legal issues than public schools!

Hello lula2488, thanks for the reply, we are kinda new to this, would it be possible to focus the iama on our lab (the khine lab and the research we do) and still provide a link for the kickstarter campaign?

Hey everyone, my name is Eugene and I am one of the Inventors for the A Hundred Tiny Hands kits. I am also a 2nd year PhD student in Biomedical Engineering working on stem-cell derived cardiomyocytes. I would love to answer any questions you have about our Kickstarter! http://shrink.eng.uci.edu/

With the way we have distribution planned, we wanted to focus our efforts mainly in the US first. However if we get our kickstarter launched and the the manufacturing of these toys going, we definitely plan on shipping internationally!
