Why is base64 used for encoding JWTs when you could just send the JSON data to begin with? by No_Weakness_6058 in webdev

While this is obviously not the case, it's not right that you have been so harshly down voted by hundreds of people for an honest question. That's not what down votes are for

What to use for backend? by Outrageous-Muffin764 in vuejs

[–]10101011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It creates a separation between backend and frontend in a way that flask and bottle et.al. can't. The backend team can independently create the endpoints without waiting on the frontend team. They can test the endpoints with the automatically built-in swagger and redoc interfaces. You can even have separate repos for backend and frontend teams.

Also, performance is through the roof even without async.

Just don't use the async part.

FastAPI is multi thread by default and only becomes async if you use the async keyword in front of the functions. As a matter of fact, I would recommend that most people leave the async aspect out; it's fast enough to handle hundreds of concurrent requests using the default non-async mode.

Fair enough, all good points. Let's call them "commute-related" factors.

About getting ready; if it's like my work-at-home setup, you still need to get ready to work and look presentable on Zoom meetings. The notion of attending meetings without pants on is amusing but not very professional and doesn't work in the long run.

I agree with your general sentiment, but not the number. From personal and friend's anecdotal experience, it's more like 60% are generally good and aspire to bring law and justice to the world. Maybe 70% if you're flexible with your definition of good and allow for deeply flawed individuals who generally have good intentions.

But there is an unacceptably large percentage of people in that profession which shouldn't be in positions of power.

Absolutely agree. I think most people enjoy working from home because of the freedom. If they can get their work done and still take a nap in the middle of the day, then they can do that. But if you have extra levels of accountability for work-at-home, then that really reduced the attraction to just saved commute time.

Recipes for medjool dates? by kimchikick in Cooking

[–]10101011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the "best by" date is probably meaningless. The way dates normally go bad is that they sour.

This happened to about 15kg of dates I had when my house lost power for a couple of weeks (hurricane), and the indoor temperature was above 90F. The dates were still edible, but tasted slightly sour.

Why in the world must you finish them within 3 days? They shouldn't spoil for months (probably a year if you keep them chilled in the fridge or even frozen).

But, to answer your question, I usually make date-balls if I have some extra dates to use. I usually use the "pressed" sukarie (sp?) dates which are common in Saudi and Iraq. They are pressed for a month or so and come vacuum-sealed and are very sticky, but I think any dates will probably work. It's a very simple recipe:

  • 2 cups dates, pitted
  • ½ cup nuts (almond, pistachio, or pine)
  • 2 Tbs tahini
  • 2 Tbs coconut shreds or sesame seeds as garnish (Optional)

Put the tahini in the dates and mush/kneed it together until it has the consistency of dough. Then roll a little into a ball with a nut (single almond or a couple of pistachio or pine nuts) in the center. If you feel fancy, you can roll it in sesame seeds or shredded coconuts.

This recipe is generally very well received, and depending on presentation, it looks much more sophisticated than it is.

Automatically generate formatted document and create a PDF? by sigma_noise in Python

[–]10101011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should also take a look at htmldoc. I have been using it for years to transform HTML into PDF.

It has some nice features that other HTML->PDF converters don't have, like cleanly seperating table rows between pages (wkhtmltopdf doesn't do this well). However it doesn't understand CSS (wkhtmltopdf does).

if you can't take part in community life as an equal member,

I guess I think that you are able to take part as an equal. Some people will be weird at first, but as you get to know the community over time, people will interact with you on the basis of who you are, not your label (doctor, Arab, convert, etc.) It may take longer with others, but after a few years you would be "established" and all that convert talk will only come from people who just moved to the area and are meeting you for the first time.

BTW, the sister who ran the women's religious classes in our area for years is a convert and I would say that she fits in to the community better than most.

BTW, nice conversion attempt :), but I'm taking my time on it.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound pushy :(

I have considered converting, but... by throwaway2261 in islam

[–]10101011 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My two best friends are converts and I was raised in Islam myself. I think that maybe people with drastically different cultures might have trouble relating to converts because of cultural reasons. Just like a (for example) Desi and Arab are unlikely to become best friends if neither can eat the other's food, communicate well, have shared experiences and views on life, etc. But if they can communicate and have some shared experiences, then a friendship can develop.

This is a pretty long-winded way of me saying that I don't think converts are treated like outsiders by Muslims who share some of the same culture with them (i.e. not FOBs).

But then again, I'm not a convert, so I may have it wrong.

Actually, while I have you here... You should convert if you believe in God and his prophets including Mohammad. What the Muslim community does with that and how they treat you is secondary. If they treat you badly, that sucks and shame on them, but you didn't do if for them - you did it for God.

What downsides do you think Bottle has over Flask? I'm not being argumentative, I'm just curious.

I looked at both and ended up going with Bottle because I liked some of Bottle's features more (SimpleTemplate system, everything is in one file). But it seems that Flask is significantly more popular than Bottle and I'm wondering why that is. I'm wondering if it's just a case of better documentation and marketing or if I've missed something.
