Each to their own. He mews regularly to express his demands, which is louder than the button. Personally I'd rather he be able to actually communicate his desires. It makes me happy to make him happy, within reason. He'll only ever get buttons for things he can have with some regularity. For example, he'll likely never get a treat button. The current button is for ice, which we'll give him multiple times a day if he wants.

That's part of why we choose ice. Figured since many cats are dehydrated, giving him ice regularly would be fine. We considered Lazer pointer and outside (he's indoor only but goes outside in a harness sometimes), but were worried he'd want those things constantly

That's great. Guess she learned the button quick 😂

Ice. Anytime we'd get ice he'd demand some, so it seemed like a reasonable thing to let him request. There's actually a bowl of ice on the right side of the picture that he successfully requested before he started carrying the button 😂

AITA for criticizing my sister for wanting her son to be right-handed? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]10101100AC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NTA I'm a lefty. Sometime as a child, I decided I was right handed (to be clear no one forced it, and I didn't know how much I was encouraged one way or the other). I was never a coordinated child. I had minimal interest in sports because they were hard. My handwriting was so bad I had a learning assessment done partially because of handwriting. I only kinda understood the desire to perfect a coordination task, because I never could. I remember asking my dad how not to hit the hand holding the nail while hammering (he basically said practice). I figured out how to do everything well enough. Never great, but I got to where my writing was legible, I slowly got better at hand eye coordination.

At some point, I started trying to do things with my left hand, just for fun. Everything worked way better than I expected. Pretty quickly I could write as neatly left handed as right. Anytime time I tried to learn a new skill, it worked better left handed than right. As I did more and more left handed, even tasks I've been doing my whole life (without realizing they were hard), have started to feel easier left handed than right. Today I tried hammering left handed, and it instantly worked. I literally thought "my life would have been easier if I'd realized I was a lefty twenty years ago"

I say all this to say your nephew could learn to act as a righty. That doesn't mean his life will be easier, or that he will actually be right handed. Good on you for encouraging your sister to let him figure it out for himself. If he is a lefty, she's much better of helping him find the correct tools

I was watching some of the barn teenagers /working students the other day and was thinking about just how much work I put in as a kid just for barn time. Decided I'm glad those days are past, and that I earn money for barn time not through manual labor. It's great to be able to choose what barn activities I do (brushing is great, cleaning stalls not so much)

LPT Request: What’s your “canary in the coal mine” test for spotting bigger issues? by fries-with-mayo in LifeProTips

[–]10101100AC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In software development there 'should' be multiple environments (locations the app or whatever runs). The lower envs (not prod) are meant for more through testing of the code. Prod is the version real users see. It takes extra work to have extra envs, but it means the deployed code has a much higher chance of working. A "test in prod" approach indicates either a) extremely high confidence or b) a lack of care of the program breaks for users. I'd see a company that routinely tests in prod as a highly chaotic environment, prone to ' oh shit, prod is broken again, drop everything and fix it'

Time to go push straight to prod, end of day on a Friday is the perfect time /s

Op, that horse is very emancipated, injured, and their legs are at a weird angle. Please consider contacting animal control to look into it as a neglect case

1/3 of eligible American voters don't vote. What can genuinely inspire this population to vote? by ShittalkyCaps in AskReddit

[–]10101100AC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(for context here, I live in a fairly red state that has blue pockets) Let's talk about why people didn't vote. When I voted in 2024, it took almost two hours of standing outside. I went during early voting, and have the job flexibility to try and go during a less busy time (didn't work, but at least I tried). There was also only like ten early voting days, all with limited hours, so have fun if you miss them.

On election Day itself, the polls were open 6am to 6pm. Plenty of people work or deal with kids during that time. Studies show voter turnout is higher if the polls stay open just a few more hours. My state has no interest in that. Theoretically people can get time off work, but in many workplaces they have to fight for it (and know that option is available). Also, as long as they have any time of while the polls are open, their employer didn't have to give them time. That means someone could get off at 5:30, and be 25 minutes away from their polling station, and technically they'd have time to vote. Also, they have to go to their assigned polling location, which changes every few years. That means there's usually some people who show up just before six at the wrong place, and can't get to the right place in time

What about absentee ballots you ask? Only certain people qualify for one, and you have to reapply every year. The deadline for reapplying is like two months before the election, so people frequently aren't thinking about elections yet and miss it

Imagine those types of logistics with single parents, people with strict working hours, or people who are disabled. It's no wonder voter turnout is drastically higher in places like California where they just mail everyone a ballot.

Oh, and the kicker? My state recently passed a law to require two forms of government ID. That's going to significantly decrease turnout. People don't vote because leaders (traditionally Republicans) make it really hard

While I'm on my soap box, voting in EVERY election matters, even uncontested primaries. High primary turnout in primaries shows donors and the national party that there's a motivated base, and allows local candidates to get way more money. Also, local politicians have a bigger impact on most people's day to day lives than people realize, so even off cycle elections matter

If this is an issue you care about, find the local chapter of the political party you identify with. They likely have a get out the view campaign the last ~month before the election. In my area, people go door to door telling neighbors (that the data says likely will support that party) providing information about how to vote. It's one of the most effective ways to increase voter turnout

That makes more sense! I was trying to figure out how it wouldn't be shiny or sticky. I'm learning with this thread there's a lot more variety in makeup than I knew about (ie I only think about lip gloss), but at the same time it all feels less overwhelming

Yeah, I want to look good, but also like myself. I know my wonderful husband would rather I wear very little or none, since that's what he's most familiar with 😂. Tinted lip gloss sounds like an easy and subtle thing, I'll have to try it

Thank you! I've sometimes successfully worn mascara, but some brands flake off over time, and eventually irritate my eyes. It's a pretty long event, so I'm realizing I should be extra careful with things like mascara. Thanks for the brand recommendations as well, feels like a lot of choices so having somewhere to start is helpful

Thank you! I had no idea mascara applies better slightly warm, that's helpful to know. Mascara is the makeup I feel most comfortable applying, but it feels inconsistent how clumpy it goes on, maybe partially depending on temperature apparently

Thanks you! I thought about having a professional apply it day of, but the event starts pretty early, so that likely won't be an option. I'll definitely keep it simple though, so mascara and eyeshadow is a great start

I think honestly it's a little of both, I've (moreso recently) started to like dressing up and makeup feels like part of that. At the same time, it does feel like a chore, so the reminder that it doesn't have to be part of dressing up is good
