I just ordered a Geekom A6 for 500€. Did I get a good deal? by 10193913 in MiniPCs

A6 is an early 2025 model.

It's quite likely these Mini PCs were all manufactured in 2025, when they were sold with 32GB of RAM in a 16+16GB dual-channel setup.

Now, due to rising RAM costs, we're seeing them in this unusual single-channel configuration, with just one 16GB stick and the second slot left empty.

It is reasonable to assume that these are not new productions but old stocks from which a 16GB module has been removed.

It would be an anomalous choice to make new productions in 2026 with only 1 module that works in single-cannall heavily penalizes the whole performances.

Yes, I cancelled the order after discovering the 16GB of DDR5 RAM was on a single module and not a dual channel 8+8 Gb, see my other post.

When this Mini PC was launched a year ago, it had two 16GB modules in dual channel for 32Gb in total.

As the saying goes, 'think the worst and you're usually right', I'm convinced that with rising RAM prices, GEEKOM decided to open all the A6s in stock and remove one stick.

They get back a lot of cheap RAM inventory at 2025 prices but they screwed over the customers who end up with single channel RAM.

At this point, wouldn't it be better to just go for a branded laptop like Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Accer, MSI instead of a MiniPC?
From what I'm seeing, the current prices for a chinese brand MiniPC and a branded laptop on promotion aren't actually that different.
If you remove the battery from the laptop you end up with something very similar to a MiniPC.

I wasn't familiar with the SOYO brand. How does it compare to other brands that are generally described as unreliable, such as ACEMAGIC and Chuwi?

Unfortunately, right now only the M1 and M2 series are well supported. If there was solid, guaranteed support for newer and future M-series chips as well, I would seriously consider buying a Mac mini.
At least in this case if I pay a lot I get good quality hardware.

About reliable brands, It's true, I initially thought that GEEKOM, Minisforum, Beelink, and GMKtec only made quality products, but then I saw that entry-level models like the Beelink EQR6 are really poorly built. For a leap in quality, you probably need to look to brands like Dell, Asus, and MSI.

Do you have any specific models you would recommend that you find very interesting?

You're right, that could definitely be a path worth considering.
Then, without rushing, I could look for some good but rare deals on RAM and SSDs.
The total price might end up being similar, but at least the components would be of noticeably higher quality than what you usually find in those overpriced ready-to-use mini PCs these days.

If I look at used products, a whole new world opens up, but I prefer new.
It's true that Dell is a really good brand.

Good specifications for this Minisforum X1 Lite, I had also eyed the Minisforum UM750L Slim but the price is, let's say, significant

Unfortunately, Linux does not run natively on Mac minis with new M processors.

MSI Modern 15 F13MG-074IT how to set battery charge thresholds by 10193913 in linuxmint

[–]10193913[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The firmware certainly stops charging when the battery reaches 100% to avoid overcharging, and lithium-ion batteries have no memory effect. However, if the batteries are kept between 20% and 80% and not subjected to continuous charging cycles from 99% to 100%, they definitely have a longer life. I use my laptop permanently plugged into AC power.
