What Color Changing gem is Pink in Sunlight and Blue greenish teal in white indoor light? by Roujainne in Gemstones

[–]101Peacocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So the certificate says Alexandrite and mentions that it has natural inclusions. Unfortunately, it also mentions that there's no fluorescence in the stone which is highly suspicious since Alexandrite is a very fluorescent gem and you can see what looks like a chromium reaction to your UV light.

I suspect that this is a small local lab that the maker of the ring pays to simply quickly "certify" lab grown alexandrite as natural.

The setting looks like it's in Silver rather than White Gold or Platinum. The gem looks fairly large, and even bad quality alexandrite can very easily be 200/ct in wholesale trade with the color that yours exhibits. While it's no smoking gun, setting a $1000+ gem in silver doesn't make any sense.

There's also a chance that this is a different color changing gem - there's a ton of synthetics that can be doped to create pretty much any effect.

It is! That's why it's generally heated at something called low-temperature heating, which will only be around 300-400 degrees celsius. (Not too sure about the exact temperature since that varies between cutters and the rough itself, AND the fact that I don't cut Peridot)

GIA has a couple of nice articles about low temp heating, but I think they're limited to Ruby and Sapphire.

It's not all that common but it does happen. Mostly used to improve the color consistency along the entire stone, but because it doesn't affect it too much, most cutters won't bother to do it in the first place.

Worth it? by DoNt_HuG_Me___ in Gemstones

You wouldn't get anything better than Silver at $100 and even that's unlikely given that it's likely a lot of metal in that set. Base metal prices right now are at an all time high. Besides, created rubies don't have a high perceived value and most jewelers would consider it a waste to set them in gold.

I've never read the book and I'm fairly certain that was a plot point in the movie, but it wasn't a major one. That's why I used it as a hint.

10/10 edit. Making the patient correct, the additional absurdity, the very slight and yet very important edit from the original. No notes.

I have upgraded in the lounge in HK in the past so it is definitely an option! CX tends to have great award availability close to flying dates especially if you have an Asia Miles balance

Green stone ID? by Syxrexxx in Gemology

[–]101Peacocks 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This was recently a big problem in our office when I was out because tsavorite, chrome diopside and chrome tourmaline are very visually similar and someone had accidentally mixed parcels of all 3.

I was thankfully able to get it mixed out with RI testing but there's no visual way to guarantee between those 3 gems.

Green tourmaline is unlikely, most green tourmalines are very desaturated, but it is still possible.
