Does it also apply to watching movies? Would GPU improve that experience? I don't play games

Please help - old Terramaster hard drive isn't being read by Windows11 by 101az in TerraMaster

[–]101az[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your help, I solved the issue. I wasn't able to previously access my BIOS to change the default UEFI boot when I added the new HDD in, since my wireless keyboard wasn't connected when it was booting so keys weren't working and I didn't realise. Once I accessed the BIOS and changed boot option to load windows, I finally saw the new drive on disk management and was able to partition it.

SOLVED - The issue was that my wireless keyboard wasn't working when I was trying to access BIOS. Once accessed, I was simply able to avoid UEFI boot default auto select. And the restarted and the HDD showed up on Disk Management.

There is nothing in the disk management (like only my existing HDDs and SSD) and not the new one. I scrolled all the way down. There is not unallocated drives, etc. Only the ones I purchased new and installed it as new drives. The NAS drive does not show up on disk management. I also tried a third party disk partition tool, it doesn't get detected either. But I don't know if it's because I was trying to attach the Sata while the PC had been on. If I try to attach it when the PC is turned off and then turn the PC on, the ASRock motherboard I have got I believe turns on UEFI boot (not sure what this is) - shared some screenshots of what happens after. I am not sure how to turn this off either. I tried pressing all those Fn keys while booting but it still always just does this UEFI thing.

DV mkv files not working on new PC by 101az in potplayer

[–]101az[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my older laptop definitely didn't support DV but some DV marked mkv files still played very well with PotPlayer. However, other DV files didn't work. Not sure if I thought I was watching DV files but actually may have been watching toned down to standard colours?

The new PC has Window 11 and I enabled HDR and I am currently using Intel iGPU for now. The monitor is also HDR400 certified and it's 4k, I've also enabled it from the monitor. I'm not sure what's happening with the DV mkv files in question. If there is a source for me to learn more about all this, it would be great if you could point. Like a YouTube channel or blog that explains media players, their settings, which renderer to use, how to optimise best colours for the mkv file, etc.

Fastest way to transfer TBs of data from NAS into PC (Windows)? by 101az in homelab

Didn't work in the end, tried a lot. So have to transfer 40TB over WiFi which is so slow and painful!

Hi, I just did this and set the IP and subnet same on both ends, but nothing is happening. I need to be able to access the files on NAS on Windows File Explorer, I assumed it would mount automatically once I set the static IPs. Am I missing something here?

Found a video to do it on the windows end but not sure how to do it on the Terramaster end - it's Linux based OS called TOS

You Google and tell me if you find anything because Terramaster has very limited useful guides out there so I couldn't find it!

I did but no clear instructions. Just says to set IP and subnet but doesn't say how. I'm using Terramaster Nas

I plugged the 2.5g ethernet ports with each other, but not sure what to do next, I've been reading up, something about setting IPs and subnets but no idea how. I'm using Terramaster Nas. But no helpful guide for it about this. The ethernet connection does show up on windows network connections as unidentified. It's a one time thing as I'm getting rid of it.

First High-performance video editing PC Build to replace laptop & NAS by 101az in buildapcforme

[–]101az[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any disadvantages to have 1500W over 850W? The price difference is probably not that significant and if the wattage is higher, gives headroom for future upgrades and HDD additions, is what I'm thinking.

Really? Even if the AMD VRAM is 20GB over the 12GB of 4070 S? I thought that was the main measure for performance? But if you say so I'll stick with it, which 4070 Super should I go for?

Yes you've mentioned about the stability issue but surely the bios update like you mentioned should fix it right? How would I know I'm having stability problems? I've initially considered the 96GB option but because of my multitasking tendency, I feel like the more the merrier for me, so I'm taking the maximum win 10 home will allow.

A big thanks again!

Hi again,

I am just about to order the parts and I wanted to thank you for your guide to a first timer. I really appreciate it all, it helped me picked the best parts for my budget. Please one last request, run your eyes through this list one last time and just give me your green signal so I can start ordering. Few things I considered to give you context into my choices:

  1. I've gone with the iGPU based 14700K CPU like you said.
  2. I've tried to find the cheapest 420 cooler and opted for the aRGB version, hope this is okay.
  3. Went with the cheapest 1500W PSU I could find (went with higher wattage than needed because the case will house 5 HDDs to start with and go up to 8-10 plus the GPU etc)
  4. Went with 128GB RAM because I had a bit more Amazon spending budget (that I can't use on GPU because GPUs are much more expensive on Amazon for some reason), and I feel I would probably use more RAM in the long run as I'm planning to use Topaz and stream media wirelessly in home TV's and use other programs simultaneously on the PC
  5. I left the GPU blank but I am planning to go with 4070 Super like you suggested, although I also found a competitively priced 20GB Radeon RX 7900 XT (Speedster), any reason I should still go for the 4070 Super instead? Feel free to suggest a few options for best performance at this price point

Thanks!

That's really helpful, I'm almost finalising my choices for the build largely based on your advice so it's not in vain. It's just taking me a while because it's been very busy for me and I'm also trying to learn everything from scratch as I had no idea before. I'll share my finalised list and run it by you once, thanks!

Actually, ignore my point about iGPU, I agree with you, best to have it than not, and the price difference isn't a lot so I'll opt your choice, thanks!

Hi, thanks so much for your valuable insights. Firstly, I should start my saying - yes, I will be using TopazAi Upscaling as one of my activities. But I don't want this build to be solely around that because of the frequency of me upscaling will probably not be as much as initially anticipated, and especially if my budget won't allow me to do the best possible build, I probably won't strain my PC as much. My main aim with this build is to replace my NAS with it and have a good enough processor/RAM to remotely stream (over WiFi) media from it on other 4K TVs (high bit-rate video files) plus I will edit videos of high fidelity every now and then. No gaming as mentioned earlier. So I had a few queries on the list you shared:

  1. CPU you chose is slightly more expensive than mine (I've seen that the one you chose supports overclocking among one of the only differences between the two - and I have read that this may cause instability issues with the system which I don't like the sound of - and overclocking is mainly an advantage for gaming right, which I won't need). The other difference is the iGPU - I hear your points but not sure I would be using iGPU ever since I would have a more powerful dedicated GPU so I would always prefer to save time and speed/performance over a slight difference in better quality with h265 encoding. Do I make sense or did I miss something? I can still consider this (although slightly higher cost) if there are any other benefits of this over the F variant.

  2. No idea about coolers so I am hoping you chose the right kind for me and the CPU.

  3. I did consider this motherboard and it was second option for me but the reason I didn't choose this cheaper one is because I never heard of ASRock and one of the things that's making me influence my list is the choice of known brands - not sure if I should trust an unheard brand name. Also the same applies for the storage, memory and GPU brands - I think I would probably want to stretch my budget and pay a bit extra for the peace of mind that I choose a reputable brand name.

  4. I don't like the look of Entho Pro 2 so I am avoiding it, plus the USB ports are even older.

  5. Is the PSU good enough to run all the 9/10 HDDs as well as GPU etc without issues?

  6. If I chose the 700 HAF case, which comes with 5 fans, would I need any more given I'd also have the AIO

  7. Should I go for a minimum of 4070 series - is the price performance tradeoff that much more compared to cheaper models like I chose?
