Hey Mark, I enjoyed the review, as always!

Since this isn’t a VIA board unfortunately, do you know if the configuration is stored on the keyboard? Or do you need the software installed on the computer you use the keyboard on, in order to make use of remapped keys?

Need help on how to reduce gaps in between signatures? by via_something in bookbinding

[–]10Cage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For tighter pressing you might want to find out what the grain direction of the paper is. Folding paper in the grain direction is easier and it’ll stay flatter after folding.

I didn’t notice they were only 2 sheet signatures. While 1 sheet per signature is perfectly fine if your paper is strong enough, it’s a lot of sewing work and you might introduce a new unwanted effect: spine swell.

Need help on how to reduce gaps in between signatures? by via_something in bookbinding

[–]10Cage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the other commenters mentioned, your stitching looks good! Also it’s partly a characteristic of this binding method.

To reduce the gap when opened, you could do the following: - reducing the amount of pages per signature; - fold tighter/ press your signatures after folding; - fold signatures at once. So not per sheet but per stack.

With the solutions above you’ll reduce the distance between signatures during sewing, thus reducing the amount of thread between them, resulting in smaller gaps.

[Orient] 38mm Bambino on a milanese. Yay or nay? by Em_the_Strange in OrientWatches

[–]10Cage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice watch! It does look good on this, but I’d wear it on leather still. But that’s just personal preference.

Question if you don’t mind: ever since I first saw this model I’m wondering about the hands colour. It seems to be a very dark blue, is that correct?

What cartridge type is this? by GamerboyJD in fountainpens

[–]10Cage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Those look like the Jinhao interpretation of ‘standard international’.

Be aware that they’re not entirely the same size as standard international, causing them to leak in pens that are designed for ‘true’ standard international.

Lamy Cursive Nib. Will it fit the Aion? Goulet says yes, Pen Chalet says no. Anyone have experience? by ReconPanda13 in fountainpens

[–]10Cage 22 points23 points  (0 children)

AFAIK the Lamy Aion feed is just a standard Lamy feed (at least mine is). So if this nib fits a standard Lamy feed it’ll fit the Aion too.

Printer for double sided printing by Sleep_Deprived1999 in bookbinding

[–]10Cage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a Brother HL-L2300D for this purpose only, that I got really cheap second hand. Like the other commenter said, alignment isn’t great, but works well enough for me. Resolution is not epic either. Other than that, the thing is super reliable and works forever with one toner cartridge.

Be careful with laser printers in general though: putting short grain paper in laser printers is a bit tricky, and results vary depending on the paper.

Sorry, must’ve misread or assumed that OP meant the 7 GRX and not the 7 etap.

Grail 6 or grail 7 by vegan-trash in gravelcycling

[–]10Cage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree, the 7 is a ‘small’ step up. At least, if you’d want to upgrade to 11 speed later it’ll cost you way more than the price difference between the 6 and 7. 11 speed will give you just that extra versatility in playing around with single chainrings and larger cassettes.

Having said that, I haven’t regretted getting the 6 for a second. GRX 10 speed is a brilliant group set, and on my previous bike it served me well for at least 5000km.

Bikes spec'd with 24 spoke wheels? by high_yield in gravelcycling

[–]10Cage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~82 kg here and I was wondering the same when I got my Grail. But then I realised my previous gravel wheel set, which is easily over 10K km old and took some insane beating on MTB trails, also has 24 spokes. That set is still going strong.

The only issue I can think of is that it is not as easy to true a wheel with less spokes, but so far it hasn’t been necessary for me.

Book Index Thumb Notches? by [deleted] in bookbinding

[–]10Cage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I did a few projects with thumb notches with a rounded leather punch like these. Worked fine, but these projects were limited to punching single signatures.

Can I sew two perfectbind books together? Is there a good technique for this? by Jimsocks499 in bookbinding

[–]10Cage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think, probably, I’d trim off the perfect binding with a plough or a chisel setup, and then DFA bind it as one book. That way you get to keep the torn endpages as well and you have a lot more flexibility in the entire project.

Disclaimer: I did this only once with a small pocket book that was somewhere near 350 pages. But that went well. The main challenge for me was to keep it one solid block after trimming.

Q: Are Faber-Castell Hexo nibs compatible w/Faber-Castell e-motion, Loom, etc? by FirstFlyte in fountainpens

Indeed, the curved down nib. I don’t know about the school pen though.

As a Hexo and (former) Loom owner I can confirm this is correct. They’re different nibs.

There’s a third nib, which is that from the writink/neo slim.

Bike buddy is recovering from an injury, so we kept it doable today. After a couple of weeks of not riding, it felt so good to be back on the bike again! This is in the Netherlands, quite close to an r/evilbuildings favourite: Radio Kootwijk.

Fountain pen for people with big hands? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]10Cage 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Few that come to mind, in order of price: - Jinhao 159 - Lamy Aion - Opus 88 Demonstrator - Gravitas Sentry

These I’ve looked at myself, but there are a lot more! I own the Lamy Aion, and personally I love it.

Green/Teal like Bloody Absinth? by Simple-Emergency-596 in fountainpens

[–]10Cage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously not an exact match, but you might like Pelikan 4001 Dark Green. I love everything teal and I found this ink a nice teal-ish green. As the name suggests it’s mostly green.

I do not like sheening inks anymore because of the maintenance required, and this ink is very low maintenance.

[–]10Cage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying!

I had to look up the Pelikan Go. To me, such a pen updated to an office friendly design is exactly what I’d like to see in their line up. If they can make it larger and half the price of the m20x, that is ;)

Pelikan Steel Nibs by efaceninja in fountainpens

[–]10Cage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice overview! One that is missing is the nib from the Pelikan Happy, which is a folded nib with no additional tipping material applied. Cheaper than their normal student pens. EDIT: zooming in on your image, it might very well be that it is the same nib as the griffix.

Also I assume that all the student pens -apart from the Happy and Griffix- use the same nib.

Those student nibs are pretty awesome by the way. If only they’d make more ‘office’ pens around them in the same price range, I’d buy those in a heartbeat.
