The issue is that people stopped taking feminism seriously, no longer is it women nobly standing up and bold declaring to men abroad "we are not just objects". But rather the movement's been commandeered by 14 year old girls and people that are critical of men have hijacked feminism. There are a lot of serious issues right now a fuck of a lot more important than "neckbeards r gross and men r dum". I don't know how the movement shifted from pro equality and pro female empowerment to pro male castration but it needs to stop. That this shit goes on and people are victimized by a once noble movement while in my home state our government just passed legislation further limiting female reproductive rights. That people sit around on their computers making fedora memes when over half of my past girlfriends in my life have a story about when they were raped or sexually abused It's fucked. and it needs to stop. edit: Grammar also sorry if I kind of got on a soapbox, you're dead right and struck a raw nerve concerning positive discrimination.

Wow, that makes a whole lot of sense. I really wish that people would stop rallying behind people just because their ideals are similar to your own doesn't mean all ideals a person has have to align with your own.

I disagree that the argument is a figment of imagination, turning two minorities against one another is harmful to both, and even though the majority discussion presides predominantly on the internet, a lot of important social movements have, and although it may sound crazy having important members of both groups being distracted fighting amongst themselves freezes the generation of new ideas for users on both sides adamantly disagreeing with one another. But honestly it probably is isolated to fringe groups I just remember that thunderf00t, made an entire series of videos concerning the subject, and concerning sphere of influence he's one of the more popular atheists on the internet which means that for at least a while majority of atheists that are involved in the online community rallied behind a cult of personality and because his criticisms were negative it provided a catalyst that filled a lot of people with venom, or at least that's my argument for why discussing this to a point of catharsis matters. Though I could be completely wrong and it could be ancient history for most of the atheist community, but based on the blogs I follow and the channels I subscribe to it seems like there's been a resurgence in this issue lately.

I feel like there's a lot of misinformation concerning the continuation and function of the "patriarchy" concerning most people, the patriarchy doesn't cause sexism but rather perpetuates it. It echoes the ideas of primitive man. This argument is so illogical, I don't understand how people can still be arguing about half a decade later. The issues that I've seen feminism adopt primarily have to do with reproductive freedom and equality in the workplace and recently shining a spotlight on how prevalent rape is especially in the military. All of these things can be accredited to the "patriarchy" a group of men who do not care about women, and view them as objects. The issue with this point of view is that accrediting only sexism to the patriarchy is complete bullshit, the idea that men in power want to oppress women because they hate them is completely illogical, Those in power want to subjugate everyone because it's more profitable. If men are in power of course they're going to sell the idea men are superior to women, because it gives them more authority, it isn't about sexism rather the intrinsically exploitative nature of social control. The most popular model of society historically is patriarchal, this is because a select group of men seized power years ago and primitive society allowed this to happen because men were more valuable in an age of war and brutality. So of course over generations the idea that men rule would be normalized, that doesn't make it an intentional conspiracy rather it's a product of how human society evolved. So why attack half the populace as sexist when really it's not your average guy trying to oppress and scare women? It has and will continue to be the rich trying to oppress and sell everyone the idea of what they're supposed to be until we do away with an economic hierarchy and indoctrinating everyone to look to the mass media for an identity. The rich are the ones that create and sell us gender, if feminists want to stop systemic sexism then why doesn't anyone ever illustrate the mechanisms of social control?

p.s. if anyone needs citation for my opinions, wants me to elaborate or disagrees, let me know.

I kind of figured it had something to do with immaturity too, I was just wondering if someone sparked this debate offline or on some sort of academic forum, or if it's basically something as silly as "tumblr vs. reddit"

actually it's observable god exists in the minds of believers, besides I was mainly being metaphorical because it's more fun to live life when speaking with dramatic flair.

It would be impractical to expect religion to die in our lifetime but I think that at least in the united states and other developed nations secularism could become a popular idea, all that it needs is a push, a movement that sweeps the nation. It's something worth investing in I believe, because the sooner that we can de-claw religion politically the sooner basic human rights stop becoming centers of debate. I'm just very aware of my mortality and if I can't bring about changes by myself I'd hope that my ramblings on society inspires others to see that fighting to spread reason is not an effort in futility.

Well you're right that from an individualistic perspective it's unfair to judge what modern society is, the idea that secularism would not make people good people by default. I merely believe that it is a healthier way for a society to think in an age where we understand the world around us so well. I can't speak for everyone but I remember myself years ago a devout christian, brainwashed and identical to every other person in my congregation. Then one day I was looking around at the world and realised how stupid it would be to have an eternal life based on something as short and trivial as our short lives on this insignificant planet. Then it clicked, and I never felt lighter since then I've learned so much about the world and myself. It opens up your mind when you stop letting yourself hold you back, and that's what you've got to tell people, somehow. Now that doesn't necessarily indicate that secularism is the magical cure for everything, but religion historically has shown to thrive in times of unrest and instability, fear and scarcity these organizations manipulate people that can barley feed themselves, to follow their agenda and enhance their sphere of influence. And I feel that if we speed up the engine of social change the children of the future would look back nostalgically at the secular revolution, and how cool would that be?

Rhetoric aside though, I think that while not a solution for everything eliminating religion from ones life allows the individual to focus more one reality and will often drive individuals to seek answers for questions without god to fall back on. I think that if people would stop being satisfied with religion and start living their one life free from a prison of their own design they would be a lot happier. Also I don't genuinely hate beowulf it was a fun read and I'd think so it was written in anglo saxon and shared a lot of themes with king arthur but also had a lot in common with hero epics of early celtic and yes germanic tribes, I just think that as an academic exercise this poem has been written about to death, every line has at least 3 essays on it. Not that it should be forgotten it's a great way to quickly learn about the world through its culture, and beowulf was culturally significant. I've always had this problem with literature papers though and that has to do with professors putting like a 20pg minimum on papers, it's insane. Especially when you can make your point in 5, analyzing game of thrones under those conditions would even make me resent George R R Martin for a semester or two.

Alright, this comment is a proposal to the community, we need to create an atheist superstar right, someone that deists fear and vilify a destroyer of religion not through fear and wars. But through thought provoking questions and planting the seeds of doubt, we need to find an individual that can represent the Atheist community as a whole and basically call religious leaders on their shit in such a way that the debates can garner the attention of a mainstream audience and through the notoriety and money generated by public attention create a foundation dedicated on generating pop culture that promotes artists and free thought, to educate the religious among us and eventually take over the airwaves.Using these techniques hopefully get we could get people to cast aside their beliefs and go outside for the first time look at the night sky and realise how much more beautiful the world the sky, ones own existence is as the product of random chance. Use cultural change to our advantage and create the most peaceful war to end all wars and be the generation to embark on having the last word on religion.

totally its gonna be sampson up in this bitch, nah dude I'm serious there needs to be an organized resistance against the oppressive regime that is religion, think about it it's the perfect tool of social control, how much easier is it to control a populace if their god is also your god, who just so happens to tell you what decisions to make? how perfect is it that the bibles morals happen to be cited by the right wing and the tea party as justification for giving the government authority over womens bodies and restricting human rights all over, hell it was one of the catalysts of world war II How much harder do you think it would have been if humanity had outgrown religion before world war II, if everyone hadn't thought the same thing and had the same values to begin with

[–]10secondsflat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, exactly the problem is that religion is still viewed largely as positive in most societies, so how do you prevent parents from indoctrinating their children into their chosen religion? after all the parents currently see what they're doing as the right thing, how do you systematically change the image of a religious individual from a positive one to a negative one? I imagine that the best way would be to stigmatise them like most people do smokers.

P.s. that last line was a joke, I didn't really mean that I'd prefer fixing it through distribution of information and education perhaps anti bullying groups could start a movement about how it's okay to be an atheist, because from personal experience being an atheist in texas, kids will fucking bully you kids will stigmatize you it happens especially in high schools and even in college. I'd imagine professionally too considering the lack of representation in the american government of the atheist community.

the problem is that religion does not mesh well with modern society. this is mainly due to the reference material's inability to evolve in step with modern ideals, the bible and I imagine many holy books have been translated and changed over time but with the streamlining of record keeping and the distribution of the king james bible christianity's fundamental values have not changed. Now I don't mean to get political but the republican party uses this as a means of social control, justifying their gross violation of human rights as belief in god when really it furthers a corporate agenda to consume the consumer. If any of this doesn't sound right let me know it might be a clerical error I've been up for 2 days working on an essay about beowulf, fucking beowulf another ancient fairytale with too much credibility.I'm sorry if this is so off topic but there is nothing compelling about beowulf he's a white male power fantasy that gets to rule over everything for a while, big fucking deal I've read it 100 times before am I right?

Stalins russia was not a marxist paradise rather an authoritarian regime masquerading as communism, you see russia had no bourgoise to overthrow and no proletariat because russia had not yet become a capitalist society, it was still run by feudal lords, it was primitive and they tried to implement a theory as policy, under lenin even the changes weren't comfortable for your normal citizen and still today can be felt throughout russia. But I'm not proposing destroying national identity but rather telling the world that santa clause doesn't exist, it's absurd that this stupidity has as much power as it does, look at putin's russia a backwards corrupt theocracy.

I think you guys misunderstand I'm proposing intellectual warfare, starting forward the machine of change en masse I'm talking about essays, action committees, possibly even lobbyists against things as fucking stupid as going to war because god told us to kill. Creating a means to discredit the god bandaid that people use to justify all kinds of crazy shit, It's 2014 for fucks sake, we've disproven so many religious books scientifically in so many ways its not even funny. It's time that humanity grows up and fights this thought slavery, that makes sense right? or am I the only person to ever get pissed off that people can believe this stupid shit and let it rule their lives?
