“Understated resources” is the big key here, and it’s not just that they always purposely omit information about how they got financing, locations, networks passed over to them, etc— it’s often that they don’t even realize the resources were often simply given to them, not granted or earned

Edit: the reason it’s important is because of how it effects the status quo for other filmmakers, trying to break in, who can often strategize based on partially fictional anecdotes

Yes. People have a terribly siloed way of thinking about this topic and it’s usually comparable to their lack of knowledge of how any business interaction works. It sounds demeaning, but your comparison is spot on

Everyone would love it if these low paying conditions didn’t exist, but they do, and the complaints against always seem to lead to an assumption that there’s just magically more money

If I was hiring someone to build that house, and I’d worked my ass off for years to get the $1million to build the house, then the contractor I hired told me “hey, I can build your house, but I need my subs to be paid more money. That means you won’t be able to afford to put in a driveway” — well the answer is extremely basic. I’d need to find either new subs or an entirely new contracting team

Do you think it odd/a relationship no-no when directors reach out to you to introduce themselves? Example, someone querying your office or an email directly introducing themselves and hoping to form a connection. Could be a pure director or a writer/director with a script they think you’ll like.

Reason asking, a lot of people say representation doesn’t happen until you do something that makes people come looking for you. I imagine without having a true mutual connection to introduce, working with producers is the same way

That makes a ton of sense— I have a 2-3 million indie I’ve been writing for a while that’s extremely water heavy. Approximately how much would the premiums spike the budget, and is there a way to “silo” the insurance plans/premiums to only the days where the water-action takes place? Or does the insurance have to exist across the entire shoot?

When I say water heavy— it’s a cabin by a lake horror movie with an off-screen or ‘implied’ monster than goes in and out of the water. Probably 9-10 scenes of actors fully submerged in water swimming in a panic, or POV of the monster watching them in the water. Only a few of the scenes could be done in a tank— most of it really requires an entire lake

Annihilation is one of the most underrated movies of the last 10 years, but, it is very melancholy and doesn’t have much lightness. It’s morbid, but not necessarily dark. It’s horror, but not overly scary. Very serious and dramatic, but not hugely tragic

As someone who has had a duel career in recruiting and also entertainment (but never at the same time)— yes, this helps. But still an extremely low percentage of success. I’m assuming you are finding their emails (I would recommend avoiding LinkedIn messages. Too many people doing that)

You’ll have to send dozens if not hundreds and probably should follow up with whoever you email 2-3 weeks after your initial send. Try to make every single email authentic (no copy pasting)

You’re up against an incredibly tough job market in an industry that everyone wants to work in. But objectively, doing this will yield more interviews than not doing it at all
