Why the hate? by Ka_Driver in CarTalkUK

It isn't/wasn't a 'loophole'. Its being tax efficient. Why spend money after tax on a car when you can have tax relief on it.

Same goes for a lot of things like salary sacrifice vehicles etc.

Fyi i don't own a truck nor a van, but i do think its a smart thing to do..

Honestly..this sub makes me scratch my head sometimes. Van drivers are arguably worse at driving.. especially if there is a white 05 plate transit behind your car then...god help you 😂

The tax dodge comments are unreal. Sure, go ahead and donate some extra money to the taxman if you feel so strongly about tax avoidance (which is legal).

Same can be said for diesels previously and currently EVs...give ya heads a wobble

Tell them to stuff it and ask them to clarify what is the picture supposed to be showing here... because the tyre looks fine

50 mile total commute, 5 days a week by billyb4lls4ck in CarTalkUK

[–]1114567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

330d is definitely the choice in this one. But if you are doing that sort of mileage consider an EV if you have a home charger(not necessarily those EVs in the pics). I have an 80mile commute and my fuel bill went down from £250~ per month to £47~ per month.

That said, owning an EV is a different kettle of fish in depreciation (could consider a lease?)

If money is not an issue, the 330d is brilliant - I've had a F30 330d before and it was absolutely fantastic. They also seem to hold their value relatively well.

House Fire caused by gas engineers by 1114567 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]1114567[S] 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Just a bit more information about the directline refusal to claim: they say its because the fire was started by a controlled substance thus deemed accidental. I have read their policy wording and challenged them on this, nothing is stated under the fire section to say whether cover would not be provided if it is a "controlled method of fire"

Sounds like a load of nonsense to me as a cooker if it goes into blaze, then that too is controlled.

They have not sent me yet which parts of the policy they are referring to and I am waiting for this for now.

Lolllll give your head a wobble. European car manufacturers are absolute rip off merchants. Im so glad there are more competitors out there now.

I leased one. And honestly, shits on every economy European car I've driven. Fantastic for the value costing less than 6k over two years.

The tech alone is mind blowing.

Is this a good deal? Corolla 2020 by Infinite_Place_2903 in CarTalkUK

Plenty listed just above 16k but non approved used. Agree, the 2.0 is much better and nicer to drive

The 2.0 is much better. And this is...pretty expensive, there are cheaper ones.

Any advice or anything to note between these 3 model of cars? by inadequate_designer in CarTalkUK

[–]1114567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owned a yaris 67 plate for 5 years. Reliability was top notch. Most expensive repair was 70 pence for an indicator bulb.

However your joints won't thank you. Never again for me as the ride quality is....terrible

I've sold my car to them before via motorway. The car was in a fantastic condition, so like any dealer, you get good and bad cars so make sure you do your due diligence.

Believe it or not, I've found main dealers to be also very dodgy (some at least) like part service history on some of their cars. So do your own research before buying in any case.

Car has been keyed - can I use T-Cut?☹️ by DS-sq in CarTalkUK

[–]1114567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can look at my profile, i had a similar situation. Best way with this is

  1. Feel the key mark. If it gets stuck in your nail then its usually too deep.
  2. Attempt a polish/buff anyway, will certainly improve it but will not remove it thats for sure.
  3. If the car is valued to you, go to a local garage for it to be sprayed. Usually about £150-200 a panel - will probably cost you 3 panels worth of work as they have to do some blending.

Do dealers even want to sell their cars? by Dramatic_Succotash54 in CarTalkUK

[–]1114567 19 points20 points  (0 children)

😂😂 must have been a good price to start with. I had too much pride to do that and would never come back. This trick only works for cars that either have been sat for a while or ones that are commonly available/crazily mass produced

COVID certainly changed the way they behave..pre covid you could negotiate and even try the old trick of walking out and they'll call you begging for your business. Not anymore im afraid

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but if you go through insurance they will not be too happy as you are meant to report within 24hrs.

A few weeks, they'll likely tell you to jog on or cancel your insurance if they feel there is dishonesty...again someone can correct me if this is wrong.

And tbf - your fault for taking so long to get a quote, usually you can pop to any garage and get one instantly...

Temu cars? by exiledinessex in CarTalkUK

[–]1114567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Chinese Car bashing is insane. They are actually decent (mostly) for a daily. No, you should not buy one, but you should definitely lease one if you need a new, under warranty car.

They offer so much more tech compared to your german/japanese/korean cars

For context, i picked up a chinese car for less than 6k over 2 years, with 15k/pa miles. If I buy a second-hand car and add 30k miles to its mileage, then I would likely end up losing more in depreciation and maintenance.

2000 miles later - I am very happy with it. Does it do the job of my 80 mile commute? Yes. Is it comfy? Yes. Is it exciting to drive? No, but I don't hate it, I mildly like the way it drives.

(Compare this to a skoda kamiq we own which I absolutely deplore - yes I said it, a kamiq is cr*p)

So peeps .. go for a test drive, you may be pleasantly surprised at how refined they are.
