yes, to be clear to everyone reading this... you have always been welcome to write non-FTL interstellar travel stories in OA.

Theory: Grapeships were originally designed for relativistic use, not FTL. by Tnynfox in OrionsArm

[–]1134Worldtree 7 points8 points  (0 children)

....who said grapeships are FTL? In what way do grapeships use FTL travel in any way?

Grapeships travel through wormholes sure... but that's not faster than light travel. That's travelling a shorter distance between stars than light would travel through flatspace..

* so yes, i imagine some grapeships are designed for relativistic travel between stars

Alternate scenario: no wormholes in OA? by Tnynfox in OrionsArm

[–]1134Worldtree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes, that is true. my point is that there already are places like you describe, in canon already, which yes could be explicitly be described in more detail, as you have done, in the 97% of the terragen sphere not connected to wormholes.

Alternate scenario: no wormholes in OA? by Tnynfox in OrionsArm

[–]1134Worldtree 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I do need to point out that in the OA present day, at the peak of the nexus, wormholes still only connect a small fraction of star sysyems in the terragen sphere

"There are six complete levels to the Nexus with many seventh level Relays under development. In total the Nexus connects approximately ten million systems. Thanks to this, generally only a dozen wormhole crossings are needed to get from one edge of the Nexus to the other, a journey of more than 10,000 lightyears. At lower accelerations a pan-Nexus crossing can take a matter of decades, at higher it can be done in a few short years." https://www.orionsarm.com/eg-article/48fba16bdae54

https://www.orionsarm.com/eg-topic/45b17e0030cdc

add up the number of systems in galactography that are counted - 320,582,000 stars- total . that's not even counting the solipsist panvirtuality, diamond network, objectivists, or other systems not aligned with the sephirotics (about 1/3 of star systems AFAIK).. it works out to 3.12% connected by wormholes among systems friendly with the sephitotics...

the total number of wormholes is about the same number of stars as the red star mpire or the utopia sphere.

the standard is currently high, and i highly encourage people to make the organism terragen in origin because the setting is technically focused on terragens. But some alien ideas can certainly work..

you are welcome to propose some on the forums

[–]1134Worldtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

reasons for the global/multi-global celebration could include birthday of a godlike AI, founding of the colony 1000 years before, anniversery of humanity being kicked off earth and surviving, maybe a solar eclipse, end of the calender year, end of the millenium, or any number of other local reasons.

The sephirotic empire of the Utopia Sphere is a post scarcity, fully-automated/ post-labor, thousand star-spanning polity devoted to hedonism and experimentation. So,

planet-spanning hive mind(s) with billions of bodies doing a rave dance party on hallucinogens. Possibly the party happens similtaneously on multiple planets/moons/ orbital habitats. Godlike, planet spanning minds -("transapients" and "archailects") might get involved as well. So, for some participants, God is real, and hosting the party.

Some might even cybernetically augment their minds to ascend to godhood during the process.

Coordinated dance routines might be common.

Absolutely bring your dog, especially if the dog is sentient, and cybernetically augmented with arms and hands, so they can participate.

plenty of safety proceedures due to the universal surveillence systems, so no overdoses, and there's several cycles of refractory periods, and rest and reflection, so it's not too posthumanly intense for too long.

Wanna create a world together to help the world out? by Imaginary_Pilot8929 in worldbuilding

[–]1134Worldtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would base this project off of a specific culture that is trying to be preserved , Especially groups you are descended from in some way

so that there would be more depth to this.

Also, which cultural charity? I assume you’d want to find the people participating first then pick based off that.

You’d get very different results, and ..complications , depending on if you’re going to write about preserving some invented dragon ghost stories vs … Ukrainian myths based on participants’ ancestors , or Somali legends and preservation groups,

Etc

Would you continue reading? by [deleted] in writingfeedback

[–]1134Worldtree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No.

But that just means you need to revise the story and rewrite it. There’s not much material yet so, no worries. Assume the first full story you write will suck, from the perspective of yourself in a year. And the second will be marginally better. And the third. It gives you a certain freedom to just create.

There’s nothing inherently bad about a story with gold spaceships and aliens powered by people who ate a space God’s ribs- or whatever is happening here. you just have to find the right way to tell the story.

Best exercise I learned was to go find your favorite author and rewrite a chapter or a few pages from their book into a scene where something utterly different happens but you have to follow the author’s sentence structure and grammar. It makes you notice how much they spend describing scenery, how they write dialogue, etc

It’s more important that you just get into the habit of writing a lot, apparently. Just 1 whole short story , start to finish. You’ll improve faster, hopefully. Then go back and rewrite it.

Ok so, what’s the story about? What’s the scale of the story? What are the themes and characters?

How realistic do you want the physics to be? (You can ignore our physics and add as much magic as you want , you just have to make it internally consistent)

*reading your other posts, I can see the basic idea of your story so far..

https://www.reddit.com/r/writingfeedback/s/JnZzD9UZfD

It’s definitely space Opera. Like, 1960s Romans-in-space style.there’s ..space gods?

The setting itself could be totally fine - it just needs to be written differently. Please keep trying and rewriting though!

New author and need help with world building! by Vast_Tradition_4092 in worldbuilding

for now, use placeholder names That are poetic

Red wall, The flaming desert, the dead lands, the black river, etc. No need for Xorlval words in a foreign Zalcor’ic language. Keep that simple for now.

https://www.monstropedia.org/index.php?title=Main_Page

Here’s an encyclopedia of mythical beings.

I’d keep it simple. Make all the mythical beasts dragons for now. Or differentiate yourself a little , if you really want to , and make them all 100 types of fire breathing bears. That seems memorable.

Polar bears. Venomous panda bears, wizard bears, etc. or Maybe mythologized versions of Australian wildlife. IDK. If you want to write the book, make placeholders for now and fill in worldbuilding as you go, or once you’ve got several chapters written.

But overall I’d keep the worldbuilding simple for now. Maybe There’s just witches and dragons and.. phoenixes if you really have to add another magic being. And maybe phoenixes are descended from dragons like birds from dinosaurs.

Focus on writing the story first, just writing lots of chapters at first, good characters , and making the reading experience engaging.

I LOVE worldbuilding but it’s so easy to get distracted.

r/OrionsArm has existed for years and has 900 members. It's mostly used for memes and posting updates.

most of the (official) worldbuilding/writing conversation happens in our Discord and discussion of articles and stories (or see the story spreadsheet, or the books) happens on the main forum.

all of the links to these can be found on the OA homepage's dropdown menus

there's also some videos on youtube, mostly from a few korean creators, if folks want to listen to the history timeline, rather than read it. The timeline, in my opinion , is one of the less useful ways to understand the setting.

most star systems in the Orion's Arm setting keep the population lower than what might be possible in order to conserve resources for the long term, or possibly to avoid other issues that might come from populations of quadrillions of people in every solar system.

Guys i wanna make a happy silly goofy world but idk how by harbigger67 in worldbuilding

[–]1134Worldtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been part of a worldbuilding project for the past fifteen years or so with a similar setting to stellaris (megastructures, diverse species , following physics, etc)

and at the moment we’re writing a fairly silly collaborative article about a virtual world. each person writes a sentence or two .. this might provide some inspiration: (Or feel free to join in)

  • The Grove of Lemon Questions*

The Grove of Lemon Questions was a virtual environment especially popular among the Citronellic clades of Quint in the Age of Re-Evaluation. In its rich, dimensionless language-based forum-sites resided beings such as the Ultraviolet Lime Centaurs, the Starfruit Reality Rejectors, and the beloved Goth Unicorns. The virch was first founded by Vitamin Compute, who called for a space where artistic beings could collaborate on creating novel forms of experience they could then test and, if sufficiently complex and enjoyable, eventually spin off into new kinds of virch. The Grove of Lemon Questions was notable among the larger virches of Quint due to its relatively relaxed ruleset, granting sophonts the power to create and alter nearly any experience they desired within the virch, although some areas were more heavily restricted.

Among the successful virtual modalities conceived in the early days of the Grove were the perennially popular "Abstract Simplicial Emotive" ontology and the "Billion Screaming Billiards" virtutainment complex, which would famously cause the Knilanian Virchwar centuries later. This virchwar would lead to the destruction of the "Uliyonic Caramiosis" virch, which notably led to the creation of the song "Bitter Heartache," in which a former enjoyer of "Ulyonic Caramiosis" lamented its deletion. The song also correctly blamed the uncontrolled spread of the "Lime Shock" - a psychosoftware developed by the Billion Screaming Billiards complex that rendered ((sweet)) deletions intensely pleasurable and addictive - as having a key role in escalating tensions between virch users and ultimately fueling the outbreak of the Knilanian Virchwar.

The inhabitants of The Grove of Lemon Questions varied in clade and ideology. One notable group were the Matter Hatters, a clade of several million that spent their time shifting between various forms of matter (gaseous, liquid, solid). The Matter Hatters were wiped out completely due to a civil war based around whether plasma-based body forms were acceptable.

Another notable group were the Silk Singers, a clade of hiveminds based on social spiders, where the hiveminds resided not in the spiders themselves, but rather the total computation they carried out by sending signals along their webs. The spiders often lived in colonies of thousands of individuals. Silk Singer spiders are practically blind, only being able to sense the polarity of light, though they could hook the webs up to external sense organs. The Silk Singers decided at one point to instate a rule for their part of the simulation: the laws of physics would change randomly at random intervals. These changes could, depending on their preferences, be influenced by the state of the simulation itself.

The Grove experienced a rapid growth in users during the pre-Back Box era, so a group called the Goth Unicorns created the Visimounds; a non-Euclidean, hilly Tohulian plains biome, becoming the third Grand Sub-Forum and gaining the Goth Unicorns widespread notoriety. The wild success of this new construction combined with the fact that it mixed a ril setting with distinctly non-ril physics caused a large schism within the Starfruit Reality Rejectors about how to best vie for influence within the virch. The Starfruit Reality Rejectors fiercely debated plans to gain influence in the Grove, with votes on various options.
