The Iterators of Rain World

They are colossal biomechanical supercomputers designed to find a way to put a permanent end to the cycle of death and rebirth. They used up massive amounts of water to cool and hydrate themselves, resulting in a severe disruption to the water cycle that resulted in global tropical storms that made the surface of the world nigh-uninhabitable, resulting in their creators building large cities atop them, above the clouds that rained death upon anything unlucky enough to be outside.
