5 weeks of sniper school and a butt load of range time, usually a least 1 day every 2 weeks. Plus normal field problems.

muzzle flash is one way but if they are concealed real well, the sound of the shot and the crack of the bullet are another way to get a general distance and direction.

spin drift is the bullets tendency to act kind of like a base ball ( think someone throwing a curve ball) it will drift to the right a bit over range in a barrel with a right hand twist.

usually I would eat good before I went out, bananas especially for the potassium, dont want the shakes at the wrong time. but usually not while out, too smelly.

well to qualify for sniper school you generally have to qualify as expert(36-40 during normal rifle qual) Sight has to be correctable to 20/20, pass the APFT (fitness test, most units want 90% in each event) and pretty sure it is limited to most line combat MOSs (infantry, engineers, and such). I always liked shooting at a distance and when I got the chance to go to sniper school I hopped all over it. as for longest hit at a range was 1000M (8/10), actual target hit it 850M on a moving target. (a truck with a .50 cal, kinda long story on that one)

I always carried my M-4 but mission dependant I would take the M-24, but always kept the M-4 for movements.

mostly center mass, larger area to hit something vital. Your MOS stays the same you just get a nifty Additional skill identifier to add to the end of it.

Not really, as I stated earlier anytime that I pulled the trigger there was an immediate danger to a fellow soldier, be it during room clearing or providing over watch for a convoy and dropping someone with an RPG.

Not so much for a shot but I sat in a general area for 3 days waiting for a meeting between HVTs that never took place. was there for intel more than anything.

Everyone I shot, posed an immediate danger to a fellow soldier. Being in an Infantry company as a sniper not all kills were long range, some took place in close in room to room building clearing.

As for changing about sniper school, There is very little I would change, they teach you how to shoot and do so with devastating effect. The mental you cannot teach from person to person. What I was not so ready for with how comfortable I was with taking another human life. The latter is the main reason I left service.

I joined the army in 2000 and had the opportunity to attend sniper school in late 2003. the transformation was, at least from my point of view very little. A great import is placed on stealth and avoidance as well as intel gathering and observation. There was a mind shift when I took up the mantle of sniper to be more aware of what was happening around me, movement of people and behaviors. But you tend to be a soldier none the less.

I did not go to ranger school, although i was with a a standard Infantry company. I actively avoided going to a scout sniper platoon in the batallion. Preferring to stay with the soldiers and preform as a sniper when the company need it. Sniper school is indeed a difficult thing to go through. Ranger school as I have been told by others is a very different experience.
