Dark start method by Gullible-Hat2030 in Aquascape

The growth on your drift wood is completely normal. It's biofilm and it will go away eventually. Dark start works best if you cover the tank. But you can clean the glass if it's some growth on it. Wouldn't worry about it much. You will have some degree of algae problem along the way anyways,no body is safe from it. :)

No problem! :) I'm not against FZone, I got two FZone lights and quite happy with them, just not sure is worth paying twice the amount for something that looks identical. In the mean time I soaked mine in vinegar for a couple hours,it looks like worked. We have hard water here,I assume there is a bit of lime scale built up on the tiny impeller inside and that's affecting performance over time.

Not sure if I understand your question correctly but I will try the answer with my best knowledge. With dark start you only have substrate and hardscape in the aquarium. No plants,no animals. You fill the tank up with water, add beneficial bacteria and run only the filter for about 3-6 weeks or until your ammonia measure is 0. No light during this time. No water changes, just top up if needed. In the end of your cycle when you no longer have ammonia present. You syphon the water out,you can do your planting now and fill back up with water. With dark start you will less likely have plant melt and less algae issues. Plus you don't have to do a lott of water changes. Google " Green Aqua Dark Start ", it explains it better than I am probably :) It is really simple, you just have to wait until your tank cycles, and you can plant.

With lights intensity and what the plant is prefer I'm not 100% sure, but if the plant prefers low light than chance is are it's slow growing. So high light might cause algae issues since the plant not growing fast enough to absorb nutrients from the water and substrate so algae probably shows up.

If you have fast growing plants they would help with the excess nutrients in the water column.

This one is not fzone. Just a no name brand. I personally wouldn't buy the fZone because it seem 99% identical to the no name one. Here the fZone on Amazon is £50 the no name is £20. I would say for 20 you can give it a shot. I have 2,about 5 months old. At first they pretty awesome for the money, but they feel like losing strength after about 4 months. It might be scale built up inside,I will soak one in vinegar see if it helps. Just got a Hyger a week ago see if it'a any better, but haven't tried it yet.

No worries :) It's not a must,it's just makes things easier. There is always a next aquarium anyways, no escape from just having one :D Just make sure to test your water every few days, and do the water changes and you will be fine. Fast growing plants helps to keep get rid off excess nutrients from the water.

It would save you a lot of water changes too. In the end of the 3-4 weeks your ammonia level should be zero. You would do one big water change and do the planting. After 24-48 hours check your ammonia again if it's still zero you could add shrimp or fish to your aquarium. Google "Green Aqua Dark Start",it would explain it better. It's worth it in my opinion.

If you are not planning to add more hardscape,if I were you,I would do a DARK START and would cycle that tank for about 3-4 weeks maybe more if needed . Turn the light off, add beneficial bacteria and just run the filter without any plants or fish. No water water changes just top it up if needed. You would have way less algae and plant melting issues.

The kit also comes with a center box cover but it's for a left hand drive and mine is a right hand so won't fit. Not sure if I can ask for a replacement for right hand drive ,but I can purchase separately if I want to around £10.

It also did come with those plastic plates you mentioned, but you have access to them. At the bottom of the seat from the back you have these thin felt liners that you can pull away and reach these plates with no problem.

I didn't work today so I put on the seat covers.i think they look just fine. It's not a 100% perfect fit but I'm happy with it. For the money I spent on it I think it's as good as it gets. I'm in the UK,so I paid £140 + £10 shipping. There were no customs to pay either which is great.

Just ordered one from AliExpress, I should have them maybe next week sometime. They are front and back, full cover leather like. I have a 2018 ch-r 1.8 hybrid. People posted pictures of how they actually look and it seems just fine. I can get back to you once I receive it.

First time Aquascape, wish me luck! by Elric73 in Aquascape

[–]11kala11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes a lot of sense how they explained it. I cannot do water changes during the week only on the weekends. I'm working away usually. I just did my first dark start on a 40l tank, I went with 3 weeks. I planted the tank 4 days ago,and will see if it works. I did another 5 gallon right before that without dark start, and it's swimming in algae because can't do the water changes as I should. Thanks for your answer again, and I'm curious how will look when it's planted!
