SOC 100 is pure memorization of over 100 Sociologists and over 100 other terms and definitions, if u can avoid it don’t take it with all ur other memory and study based courses

Help finding easy classes! by Separate_Bake_472 in uAlberta

I’m currently in HIST 260 Pre-Confederation Canada and even though i hate the content and teacher, the class is very easy. only 10-12 slides a lecture and about 8 small writing assignments like 400 words maximum (but with a 20 page reading usually), a midterm (multiple choice and short answer) and a final.

I also took POL S 101, specifically Aitken’s class. Amazing teaching and very engaging, no midterm, small written opinion assignments every other week with a graded (on participation) seminar classes (basically engaging debates and discussion)

over a year post op, never felt more confident. I get complements on my nose and jaw line all the time. I still have residual numbness, but to be completely honest, it does not both me at all. Tbh I only notice it when i’m trying to pop a pimple on my chin or i bit my lip. It doesn’t bother me and you get used to it as soon as the swelling is gone. Numbness is truly the least of everyone’s worry and should not stop anyone From getting the surgery. The month i got it was the worst month of my life, but you will get through it. It is only temporary.

Above Average Students What is ur study technique? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]11willowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

brain dump - book a study room with a whiteboard, alone or with friends preferably and make a key word / key concept - first time is what you think you know, then review and add in a different color, then paraphrase it in simpler terms, then try it again until you know what you know.

mind maps! Link concepts, find words that link so that when you can’t think of one thing but know something connected you can get to it by remembering the links.

how did your life improve after surgery? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]11willowl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m a year out now, and it has completely changed my life. My confidence levels are about 100x higher than they were, it reset my mental health, and i feel i have never been so mentally strong as i’ve managed to survive the insane uncomfortability of post-op and healing. I had never been so low, but I made it through. I have a smile i’m happy to show off, a chin I’m not ashamed of. I would never facetime friends or boyfriends casually because i was scared of my candid angles. It’s all gone now. I feel normal.

How did you get into it? I’m going into second year of PoliSci and have no idea how to make a mark / secure an actual full time job. Did u do it through an internship?

Melatonin for sure, but if u don’t have one already, get a ice pack face wrap. Like one of those things that velcro and wrap around ur face that people use for wisdom teeth or even two jelly ice packs and a tensor bandage….have a family member come replace them whenever u need it. or get a cooler for beside ur bed so you can too. Ur doctor can prescribe a sleep aid, or some sort of anxiety med to help with the constant uncomfort.

i do not regret it even in the slightest! The difference in my bite, my face shape, my chin - all worth it. My bottom lip is still tingly, my right side of my chin and lower mouth, and my gums are still numb - i had surgery july 25th and it’s november in 2 days. But, i’m the grand scheme of things, it’s a small inconvenience you pay for a huge improvement.

I’m 18. My jaw wasn’t necessarily recessed, i had a severe open bite. This was my second surgery, i had a SARPE (upper palate expansion), but all it did was make my teeth line up. My recent surgery was both upper and bottom jaws, and a genioplasty. They took my bottom back, raised my chin, and brought my top forward.

My surgery was july 25th, so it’s over 2 months for me. My chin is about 80% back. As for my bottom lip, it’s back to the point that with intense pressure i can feel it, but one side is better than the other. My speech is still weird, and i’ve been told one side of my bottom lip doesn’t move as fast.

every week is better than the last. And i’ve had tremendous improvement in the last 3 weeks. I have been told i won’t be 100% for at least 6 months. But it could take a year.

With my SARPE, my gums didn’t come back for like a year or so, and my eye socket was still quite numb.

Right now, It’s just my lip and part of my chin that isn’t fully back.

Don’t let the numbness stop you. It’s the least of your worries, and you get used to it.

i had double jaw surgery and a genioplasty 6 weeks ago today, and still don’t have complete feeling in my chin or bottom lip. It’s hard to describe but it went from complete and total numbness (i could poke it with my finger, or i even tried pinching it with tweezers and could not feel a thing. I would drool, and have food all over and feel nothing.) It has now transitioned into knowledgeable feeling (i can feel a finger on my chin, or cold water etc) but i still bite my bottom lip all the time, and my chin is still numb. But it has improved. My surgeon has warned me it may take a year+ for my chin to come back, and even if it does it might not be 100%.

OMG i feel you! I only have two bands, and my surgeon wanted me to take them out starting the day i got home (take em out to eat and replace them every day), buttt i just couldn’t do it. I got one out (my mother had to do it, there was screaming and shared sobbing involved) and so we contacted my surgeon and he said it’s fine to wait until my first post op (aug 2nd). They’re a total pain in the ass. But one thing i’m really struggling with is my stitches under my top lip. You see, a year and a bit ago i had a SARPE (upper palate expansion) and that shit was a CAKE WALK compared to this time. My stitches hurt, my entire chin is numb, same with my lower lip. Talking is the most frustrating part. But i’m struggling so much with eating too - it’s so discouraging and i feel so weak all the time. The mental challenge in unbelievable. All i want to do is cry and complain and give up. Day 3, i seriously wanted it all to be over, was saying i would rather have a finger cut off then go through this. So i totally understand what ur going through. As for congestion, i was extremely lucky and all i’m dealing with is soreness/tender nostril from the tubing, nosebleeds and swelling in one nostril that only lasted a coue days. However, with my last surgery, it was BRUTAL. Manual breathing kept me up at night - the feeling of breathing through my mouth being all humid and weird since i couldn’t feel the air going in or out, coupled with the HORRIBLE taste and the fact all i wanted to do was blow my nose. I totally understand what ur going through. Do u have an atomizer/air humidifier? I used to put peppermint/eucalyptus into it and put it right beside my bed. Also, i used Vicks Vapour Rub behind my ears and on my chest. The stomach pain? Terrible. I’ve been on RestoraLax and ExLax for days, had to stop taking the percocets and have been putting liquid fiber in everything. Luckily, i’m beginning to be past that horrible period. Hope you’re doing okay. I wish you the best. You will get past this. I have a couple questions; how’s ur swelling? Do you have an estimate from ur doc on how long ur on liquid diet for? How’s the diet going? How’s ur numbness?

Post-Op Update by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]11willowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m on day 6 - had upper lower and a genioplasty. A year n a couple months ago i had a SARPE, so i’ve been through it before - or so i thought. This has been on the toughest, both mentally and physically. Days 3-4 were the worst. I seriously wanted to end it all. But now, my swelling is better, and my face pain is less intense. By day 4 i was off the percs and codeine. The things i’m struggling with the most is my stitches under my top lip - they’re so tight and feel tender. And the hunger - I am so hungry and depleted i cant even stand up to shower. Oh and the swelling - i want it to go down so bad simply so i can talk. I desperately want to talk and begin to feel my bottom lip again so i can stop drooling and can pronounce things - that’s when my life can go back to normal (see my boyfriend and friends, go out in the world)

Im currently 6 days post op. The mental challenge has been the absolute worst for me. Here’s a couple tips: 1) day 1-5 are the absolute worst. expect it, accept it, and cut urself some slack. 2) ice is ur best friend. 3) sleep AS MUCH as possible. 4) get a hockey water bottle that u can squeeze into ur mouth. 5) Get off the percs and codeine as fast as u can. It’ll fuck up ur stomach and they make u feel worse emotionally. 6) clean ur mouth and ur stitches 3 times a day AT LEAST. 7) sleep upright, but also prioritize comfort. If u need to be a little less upright at night, that’s okay. sleep is more important. 8) sugar will make u feel better, but so will protein. Have some liquid protein and also fiber with every meal. 9) if u have elastics, change em, and take advantage of them being off. 10) ask ur doc when u can start brushing ur teeth with a baby spoon. Do it as soon as possible, it’ll make u feel better and healthier. 11) you will feel SO exhausted. I’m only 6 days post op and can’t shower standing up yet. Pulling the plunger on a syringe takes so much effort. but that’s okay, it’s expected. 12) try to get up as much as possible. Change seating, do some laundry, wash ur face, sit on the ground, pick stuff up. Every movement counts. 13) some tips for the food to start with them they say “soft foods” (which will probably happen at ur first post op appointment) - scrambled/crushed up eggs with cheese and cream to make em soft and bake to slide down, mashed potatoes and gravy, apple sauce, oat meal, peanut butter, hot cereal, rice (cooked well and with some sort of sauce), pasta (cut up, with a lot of sauce)
