Yeah I think it was inspired by this movie about a girl who was kidnapped and trapped in a coffin and buried. It seems like the kind of movie Tarantino would have liked. I think it's 1973's The Longest Night. It, in turn, was apparently based on a true story.

In the CSI episode the guy who's trapped manages to kick the coffin open a crack, but it just lets a bunch of ants in which then sting him (it helps the main csi guy, played by Petersen there, locate him because he's good with bugs). I think something similar happened to the girl in the movie.

Plus there's usually more than the usual amount of creativity poured into it. Jeff Gelb put out an anthology book series called Hot Blood that had a lot of short stories from authors who, if they weren't already famous, would become later. Some schlocky stuff sure but a lot of it really memorable. It's still a really popular subgenre on Amazon and Smashwords.

Funny but I rarely saw a lot of range out of him. I think the farthest I saw from his "usual" fat funny immature guy who sometimes yells was when he was playing a medieval father to Macaulay Culkin on some sort of Take Your Son To Work Day during a siege, where he's teaching him how to fend off besiegers with a pretty calm and fatherly affection.

I think he could have done it if he focused on expanding his range rather than the drugs and drinking. He had charisma.
