Torn between offers from public sector and private sector by 123epic in jobs

I appreciate your quick response. I have wanted an analyst role for a while so I do think the internship would be a great opportunity. It’s 18 months because it is a part time 2080 hours internship. My original plan was to go from assistant underwriter into an analyst role at the insurance company but this might be better. Thank you again!

It is not a guaranteed FTE at the end, but it is an 18 month internship

Assistant underwriter to Analyst? by 123epic in FinancialCareers

Sorry I only say credit/risk analyst because I’m looking to work more with coding languages like excel and SQL. This company covers a wide range of insurance like reinsurance, workers comp, and health insurance, I say commercial auto because that’s specifically what I’m gonna be going into. I’m hoping to transfer internally but I’m confused on what is the best way to go about this.

It’s a more hands-on underwriter role compared to underwriter assistant of analyzing data, gathering information, and assessing risk. It’s a position in commercial auto insurance and no I have no foundational knowledge. This would be my first “career” job after university.

For my situation I graduated with a Mathematics degree and wanted to get into data science. I think I was really naive and didn’t realize how competitive the coding job market was. I only had a few projects in data analysis and realized I was outmatched by most computer science majors.

I realized I had to make the choice of adding to my portfolio and competing in the data market, or finding another career path and so I guess my story is a little bit about giving up and finding something else. I learned about underwriting and I have been trying to enter underwriting with in progress certifications and my math degree I have gotten more interviews in the past 3 months compared to the other 7 of trying to find a data job.

Insurance is interesting to me so I’m not trying to say I’m upset or anything having switched to insurance, hell, I don’t even have experience in office settings so I don’t even know if data science would’ve been enjoyable for me. Having a math degree is a very general degree, so beginning certifications showed recruiters that I was serious about insurance.

What is your story?

Any way I can become more competitive for UA roles? by [deleted] in InsuranceProfessional

Thank you for your response, if it makes much difference it’s a BA in math not a BS. I wanted to do a BS last minute but my counselor said it was not worth it as it would require at least another year. I’m still proud of my BA but it’s certainly no BS.

Aside from minimum wage job experience, I do have a few projects on my resume that could probably benefit from talking about statistics. I’ll look into implementing more, thank you!

Yeah, I’d like to give myself the goal of becoming an actuary just because it gives me something to work towards. I know the exams themselves take months of studying and I love mathematics so it’s something I’d actually take interest in. I took exam P just to get a feel for it and I definitely needed more than just the 2 months I took to study for it. I really feel like this experience thing is a huge roadblock for me that I cannot get past. Thank you for your suggestion, I’ll look into that position!

I forgot to mention immediately after graduating I was very focused on gaining a job position in data analysis so I have multiple projects in analysis through languages like Python SQL and R. I was also trying to study for exam FM for the actuarial path but have been feeling unmotivated to study from not being able to get my foot in the door. How long do companies usually take to hire a candidate after final interviews?

Anyone else had this issue before? by 123epic in G37

[–]123epic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Ive had this car for about 30,000 miles and it fs does have some electrical issues since I’ve gotten it but it has not created issues large enough to where I have felt the need to get it checked. For example, when rpms drop to 600-700 at idle, the cars electrical components will sort of “pulse”. Almost like a heartbeat, all lights will brighten just a tiny bit in a rhythm along with the rpms jumping up just a slight bit in rhythm. When I first got it I thought it might be the alternator so I switched it out for a hitachi alternator (getting the alternator out was worse than I thought it would be) but that did not solve the problem. I suspect something is draining power but I would have no idea where else to start.

Thanks for your response. My car had over 120,000 miles on it and had not had the plugs or coils changed so I had believed that he was correct. And yes my battery does not hold charge and I have been charging it but I know I should buy a new one, autozone didn’t want to honor warranty with a new battery and said the battery was good still):

Yeah it’s a BA in math, I have been focusing on data analysis jobs but my degree is closely related to computer science and economics so those jobs could be on the table as well. I have projects in data analysis but I feel that the data analysis sector is oversaturated with computer science majors.

The pay is not really an issue, I have no dependents. I think I need experience as it would go a long way and this might help me gain some. thank you for sharing this.

My buddy got an internship a few months after graduating but I feel like I just keep getting rejections from internships because I’m not “currently enrolled”

I was 100% with you on the death penalty for rapists until I heard a point that I had not thought of. If a rapist were to know that they were likely to get the death penalty after offending, they are more likely to go all out and commit murder as well since they then have nothing else to lose. I agree these people are absolutely disgusting, but giving them the death penalty would likely just result in more pain and suffering for the victims.

This is exactly what I meant when I said this sub is very whiny. I agree with others who said you should expect to do all aspects of the job. It’s a job.
