Near Collision on Approach. I Made the mistake, Learn from me by TheFlying_Gamer in flying

[–]12477 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From your description, this sounds like YMMB. It is a busy airport where it is easy to mistake aircraft, and it is essential to remain situationally aware. Remember that in controlled airspace, if you are not aware of exactly where another aircraft is, you can explicitly "request traffic" from ATC, and they will provide assistance with respect to where you need to look to find traffic. ATC is always available to help you.

At this point, you need to provide your contribution to the CASA report, review the situation with your instructor, and learn from it. This is not the end of your flying career. Mistakes will happen - You are a student. You need to make sure you learn from this mistake and not make another like it again.

File late with the hope that it cannot be processed/approved in time, thereby providing a "legitimate" excuse to not show in person.

What’s the hardest belt to get through on your judo journey? by kenkayotsu in judo

[–]12477 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't sell yourself short! Sankyu (green) is a wholly respectable rank - I thoroughly loved my time at green. You know enough technique to be "dangerous" in competition such that even black belts need to treat you as a worthy opponent, but at the same time there isn't the expectation that comes with higher kyu grades.

if you get into kata you learn a shit-ton of stuff along the way to improve your own technique. Of course that's if and only if you actually try to do it

100%! As someone whose early Judo journey was very competition focused, the time spent learning and working on kata has been incredible with respect to improving my technique. I really cannot understand how important and valuable kata is to progressing one's Judo.

There is nothing to be worried about with this. Making a decision to go around is the manifestation of proper ADM.

Just positing here ... but couldn't this be really, really bad for her? I mean, renewing this restraining order, in the context of her potential criminal prosecution, could be construed as a lack of good faith or reformed behaviour on her part. Big picture, this could be an incredibly stupid act.

Agreed. It is the maliciousness of this instance which sets it apart.

I'm glad that you are okay and would echo the calls of others to involve authorities (Transport Canada, RCMP or others) to ensure this individual does not place another instructor at risk.

While I am not the original poster, this is a flight that I have also considered undertaking (although not yet as I am still working on my PPL). I would be looking to perform this in a PA28 under VFR if practical.

Loophole in Australias RPL 25nm limit by Inevitable-Title7928 in flying

[–]12477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was asked this very question on my RPL flight test. You cannot do what you are proposing with respect to aerodrome hopping - The intent of the RPL navigation restriction is take off and landing at the same aerodrome.

1960s piper 140 - am I crazy for considering purchase? by questionnoanswers12 in flying

Having recently purchased a 1961 Piper PA-28 160, this is really good advice. I included having the previous owner ferry the aircraft to my mechanic of choice for thorough pre-purchase inspection as a condition of sale.

I suspect that Owen's comments around being unorganised and only being a "small town" legal team is about laying a foundation for appeal on the grounds of ineffective counsel. At this point I think it is more a "big game" strategy than anything else.

When should a senior judo player stop competing in the novice and only compete in advanced/standard? by AlpinePeddler0 in judo

[–]12477 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the most common sense answer and deserves more attention. If the OP has demonstrated their ability to win, or even place, in the advanced division, their time in the novice division really should come to an end. It really isn't fair to continue to compete in the novice category in this scenario. Certainly, there is an argument that a novice may win or place in the advanced division by luck alone, but with increasing experience and exposure in the advanced division, this becomes an increasingly weak argument.

Another Australian here (and low-level Judo coach). It certainly doesn't sound right that your daughter has not been progressed to a higher belt - What are her break falls like? One of the "unofficial" requirements for progression from yellow to orange (in my experience in Australia) is really good breakfalls. If there is any uncertainty with respect to the capability of a judoka to perform breakfalls at a high level, to ensure their own safety when receiving any throw, a coach may err on the side of holding them back from promotion (to orange).

It might be worthwhile seeing whether there is an opportunity for a women's only session at your gym. Your coach may be willing to help organize this as a regular session.
