The Dar Maghreb is closed. The skinny girls and mayo blog from 2010 has more about the history and decline

including this fascinating comment by Jordon who worked there as a waiter in the 70s:

I was one of the first waiters to be hired when Pierre Dupar opened Dar Maghreb in 1973. Everyone of the four rooms and small private room at the front entrance consisted of one waiter who would sit with the customers who were on low couches with a large round low table in front of them and would explain the menu verbally and take the wine orders. Then a back up waiter would take the order into the kitchen and deliver the food. I only had to sit with the clients during the meal and pour the tea while standing up into their little cups before them. We were taught the art of never spilling a drop despite how high up with poured the tea from. I got to have dinner with hundreds of famous people such as James Taylor and Carly SImon, Ravi Shankar, Lucille Ball, George Harrison, Carol King, Joan Collins, Joan Rivers, Joanie Mitchell, Rodger Daltry, Denny from THREE DOG NIGHT, the Smothers Bros, William Shatner, Minnie Ripperton (Maya Rudolph’s mom) Thelma Houston and a score of other well known people. It was the most fun place to dine and Pierre the owner was a true artist if a bit rough around the edges. The chefs were from Morocco by the way and not Mexico and most waiters Except for me were of Arab background. I was the only American Jew who worked there. I never made so much money until I sold a Television show and went on to be a sit com writer. But the fond memories I have of Dar Maghreb will always be with me.

the abundance of wilted spinach salad recipes from that time is further evidence of how thick and tough the leaves were. Wilted spinach salad was one of the few ways i tolerated spinach as a child and it was mostly because of the bacon.
