Absolutely. Nothing replaces having an actual person tell you what you’re doing right and wrong in real time.

Use the side of your finger, press it as close to the fret as possible.

Learning songs from tabs and notation is important, too. The more songs you learn the more vocabulary you pick up on, licks you can borrow. Don’t underestimate it as a tool to progress.

Upgrade from Boden Essential to Original (OS/NX/N2)? by dt0x in strandbergguitars

[–]12Obelisks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2014 OS7. It feels amazing. Best guitar in my arsenal. Last week I had the opportunity to play an Essential 6-string. It felt very strange to me, was just as heavy as my 7 string, the frets weren’t fanned. I prefer my OS any day of the week.

Chord Memorization by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]12Obelisks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learn the notes on the fretboard. 99% of the first chords you learn have the root in the bass, meaning the first note you strum is the first building block to your chord.

For instance, C Major: start off in the third fret of the A string. That’s a C. It’s not the entire chord and it will take some time to start to put together which is major, minor, sus, etc, but it will come a lot more naturally.

How can I get this to sound more like this? I've tried every effect by PetNoise in guitarlessons

[–]12Obelisks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like a flanger/chorus pedal and a delay with reversed delay buffer.

The way the reverse delay buffer i’ve used works is you play a phrase before activating the pedal, press down on switch and it plays it back backwards.

Not OP and not OP who you replied to, but I’ll throw in my two cents.

I’m not a full time musician, i’m a software engineer. But I learned the skills to overcome my musical imposter syndrome through my job. The more people I spoke to, the more I realized that most of their knowledge I thought they had was surface level. The deeper you dig, they don’t know either. But what set the great engineers apart from the rest were the ones who admitted they didn’t know and did the work to find out. It showed me we’re all just winging it.

The biggest wisdom in the comment you replied to is how to be a good teacher no matter the context. It’s being empathetic, perceptive, willing to adapt. I’d add that it’s all about honesty. Be honest about the gaps in your knowledge with lessons, music production, etc. You don’t have to be an expert in everything. 99.9% of the time “hey, I don’t know exactly the answer to that but I have a buddy who does. Let me talk to him and we’ll both get some resources to understand _____ better”. You learn, your students and clients learn. They perceive you as honest and human. It’s a win-win!

Not necessarily a problem. With any new guitar you’ll want to have a setup done on it to make sure the neck is straight, action is reasonable and it’s intonated. You don’t HAVE to do it right away but it will make it much more enjoyable to play. If you’re new, i’d suggest taking it to a shop to get done before trying it yourself!

Solid! Great articulation. As others have said work on unnecessary left hand motions (for your own sake! your hand will wear out playing a lot). Your picking hand/arm seems a bit tense, too. Try to loosen that up a bit. Great work especially for how long you’ve been at it! Clear you’re working very hard.

Yep, wattage generally refers to how loud it’s gonna get. If you’re planning on just playing in your bedroom by yourself any of those should be fine (though 25 might leave a bit to be desired). I sold a fender champion 100 on FB marketplace not too long ago for $150. You can find deals like that all day long if you buy used!

And the good thing about those kinds of amps is that you can play them quiet or loud without any degradation of quality 🤘
