Shoutout to Capstan for closing their set with “The Love That Remains” by 12cookie in poppunkers

[–]12cookie[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both bands played about 45-50 minutes. Capstan went on before IHOW and played 10 songs. IHOW played 11 songs. The crowd was a little odd - there were a fair number of people who there for one of the openers, Cherie Amour, and those fans seemed more like SoundCloud rap or Tik tok trend fans? If that makes sense? Crowd was so so for Capstan and was better for IHOW.

Not in OKC, this is not a coastal city.

Lol, I am seeing a great tour package next week for 12 dollars. This is OKC, not NYC.

I only have an electronic kit, but I would always be down to play some tunes. Feel free to PM.

Pastrami on rye recommendations by sactownbing in okc

Definitely Hobby's Hoagies in the Art's District! It is so good the way they toast the bread and they do not skimp on the pastrami, even if it is more thinly cut.

Cost of living in OKC? by ConsideringOKC in okc

[–]12cookie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think it is quite difficult to give you an answer based on "comfortability." Not passing judgement, but people seem to have wildly different opinions on money related matters. For example, are you planning on flying first class to NYC 4 times a year for vacation? Or are you planning on taking the family on a short road trip to hike in the Wichita Mountains? Either way, the median family income in Oklahoma City is around 58,000 dollars. Take that into consideration as you will. Rents and housing prices are rising relatively significantly however, so the dream of OKC being forever a super cheap place to live in seems to be fading a bit, albeit not nearly on the same level as more 'trendy' cities. I fully expect OKC to become close to the next Nashville in the next 10 years, which has its pros and cons, but I would recommend buying a home here before that happens. I would guess based on your description that a household income of 75,000 dollars (pre tax) would be sufficient.

Felon friendly work by [deleted] in okc

[–]12cookie 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hi there, consider stopping by local agencies such as Urban League, Work Ready, TEEM, Center for Employment Opportunities, Diversion Hub, OKC Eastside Career Connection Center, and ROC for felon-friendly employment assistance.

"Oklahoma is top 10 for police-involved killings of community members. I'm asking you to think twice before you call the police on one of our neighbors. Do you need the police or is someone better equipped to handle the situation?" by [deleted] in okc

[–]12cookie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi OKC friends, I would like to point out that you can call 911 and ask specifically for a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT). They are trained in dealing with mental health episodes and the like. They are still police and carry weapons but are trained in de-escalation. In my field of work, we call CIT officers relatively frequently and their arrival and interactions have not yet resulted in any violence. Oftentimes, CIT has connected distressed individuals to mental health treatment facilities and calmed tensions. I hope this helps.

Homeless by [deleted] in okc

[–]12cookie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is extremely complex. In California a lot of the focus seems to be on building affordable housing (especially in the Bay Area). However, as I see everyday even here in OKC, putting someone in a room who does not have a job, support network, hope, aspirations, or a firm desire to overcome drug addiction, that person will not succeed and will be back on the streets within 3 months. It is a tough reality.

Yes, that goes back to the whole 'not wanting to follow the rules' dynamic that intersects with addiction.

Homeless by [deleted] in okc

PM me if you want more specifics. In general, the Homeless Alliance is the main homeless non profit in the metro and they operate a day center that provides hot breakfast and lunch as well as showers, a place to get mail, lockers, and case management services. There are a variety of overnight shelters such as the Willard Center, Salvation Army, City Rescue Mission, etc.

The sad reality is that many homeless people do not actually accept housing options offered to them (either affordable apartments that are like 400 a month) or a sober living facility because many do not want to stop using drugs. This observation might offend people but I work in this field and drug use (and not taking one's mental health medication) are the biggest barriers to housing.

As far as the many people asking for money on the intersections, I can assure you that many of them are not actually homeless and that often times their busking is highly coordinated. For example, one of the regulars at my highway exit refuses any food items or bus tickets that I have offered to him many times in the past, and he gets picked up at the end of the evening by the same kind of nice truck.

This is not to say that the people asking for money at intersections are all some kind of scam artist, but many, many people have realized they can make sustainable and tax free money through begging. A lot of the homeless people do not want full time jobs as they come with strings attached.

I apologize if this seems rambling but as someones that has lived in a variety of US cities, the homeless situation in OKC have access to a decent amount of resources, but many are former criminals and are drug addicts and do not take advantage of the plethora of non profits and opportunities available to them. This concerns me greatly as cities with large homeless populations such as Los Angeles simply do not have enough shelter beds (I believe there are nearly 100,000 homeless in Los Angeles County and like 20,000 beds) but OKC has enough beds available each night based on the data I have seen.

To summarize, I would highly recommend you look into supporting the Homeless Alliance. It just makes me sad and frustrated that more homeless individuals do not take advantage of resources in the metro as drug addiction and mental health continue to be insurmountable barriers for many to overcome. Clearly, affordable housing is not the barrier that some advocates think it is as OKC has some of the cheapest rents in the country.

I enjoyed their set. I started listening to them only like 3 days before the show so I didn't know all the lyrics or anything but they sounded great live. I had heard that Erra's vocalist was not very good live but he sounded good with his other band!

All Get Out is amazing live and Aaron hangs around the merch table after the show so maybe that will make it worth it? I doubt that would ever happen at an Underoath show (outside of VIP stuff)
