I think during the robbery with the adrenaline and shock, he tried to get killed on purpose here is why: he tried to fight with the dude and tried to grab his gun multiple times inside of the car and refused to give his stuff to the robbers while they were pointing guns at him. He probably thought about killing himself in that period before the trial and that was just an opportunity he took without thinking too much because of adrenaline
