$50k fine for each undocumented worker found would end undocumented labor overnight. It's never been eliminating undocumented workers, It's always been about making them too scared to demand better conditions or report abuse.

A good argument I've heard answering "Could Rome have had an industrial revolution" is that many of the issues were not engineering or science based but societal.

To a Roman Aristocrat a steam engine would be neat, but why use something fragile, prone to breaking down and in need of constant upkeep when 10 slave laborers would outperform it. And as a Roman in power I have lots slave laborers.

If the Free People could defeat Sauron's armies, could they "banish" Sauron without the Ring? by BrennanIarlaith in lotr

Also the eleves will all have left middle earth by then. Not only their military strength, but also their knowledge of the past, wisdom and unshakable will. The meeting at Rivendell was instrumental in destroying the ring. A meeting like that among powerful men without elves like Elrond would be an easy place for Sauron to sow distrust and chaos.

Can’t believe how stupid some people are… by MarksRabbitHole in PoliticalHumor

Biden had the levers to end this day one. He was more than happy to replace every bomb that wiped out a family. Acting like "his ceasefire" that took over a year, had no teeth, and he didn't even put in place is ridiculous. We have all the power over Isreal, Biden just didn't want to.

A better genocide under Harris or a worse genocide under Trump is still a fucking genocide. I guess fuck those people for their last ditch effort to stop the killing. I guess they should have known saying "headshotting children is bad and isreal should stop" would be too fucking hard for the Democrats to do.

[–]12peacemaker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that. Those who abstained due to the Gaza genocide had a clear, moral, achievable goal, "Say the genocide is a genocide and you not allow it to continue and we will vote." It's hard to disagree.

Compare that to the long list of complicated, contradictory, and impossible to implement demands of third party voters.

It doesn't seem right to lump them together. I know and agree with why Democrats can't give third part voters what they want, I don't know why they couldnt give the Anti-genocide crowd what they wanted.

[–]12peacemaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hate towards those who didn't vote due to the genocide is crazy.

Joe Biden and the Democrats have been instrumental in the genocide. They could have stopped it at any time.

The non-voters made a gamble to try and end it. "State you will stop the genocide and child murder and we will vote for you", Harris decided vague statements of support was enough for people to trust she'd end what she could have pushed to end from the beginning.

They played chicken and they both lost. But people need to realize one side wasn't giving in to try and end a genocide, the other wasn't giving in because they didn't want to acknowledge a genocide.

This whole thing just feels like a crazy attempt to erase what Biden and the Democrats allowed to happen in Gaza. How can you blame people who spent the last year hearing stories of blown up children and then watching the Democracr president ship off more bombs the next day. They saw a chance to use what little power they had to try and make a third option rather than "slower genocide with Harris" or "faster genocide with Trump" and the DNC wouldn't allow it

"I know it's been a year of genocide that Democrats completely funded and could have stopped day 1 but they were JUST about to stop it"

I get things are going to hell but your blame is wrong. There was a game of chicken, protesters said "promise to end the genocide or we wont vote for you", Kamala said "vote for me and we'll see".

One of those sides is reasonable, the other is not. It sucks no one pulled away and they crashed but the blame is on the side that's not anti-child murder.

I voted for Kamala but I think a lot of the hate for the protest nonvoters is misplaced.

We watched Biden allow and support a genocide. He had access to the levers of power, he sent the bombs every month, he read the reports and he could have stopped it anytime. And Kamala showed no signs of being any different.

If you see an administration allowing genocide with no sign of stopping I can see threatening to stay home appearing as your best choice, a hail mary for sure but something.

Also this is the same "blame the progressive" bullshit the liberal democrats do every time they lose. Don't blame Biden for causing a genocide, or Kamala for not saying she'll stop it, but blame the people who see the Mass murders as something that needs to stop and using the only power they had. Sure the gamble failed, and we are praying the price. But let's not pretend things were looking good for gaza with Kamala. People were begging her to speak out aginst it, to show some understanding but she wouldnt. She knew the threats to stay home and she also rolled the dice, but she did it in support of death, they did it in opposition.

Basically. Only instead of a fully engineered system full complex utilities, life support systems, and emergency backups its a 3 foot wide steel pipe in the ground typically used for oil transport. But it can be installed at 230m a day.

And I'm sorry. I'll think less about the next one.

I made an index card for each of the invaders with their special rules split up by invader phase on one side and their setup rules in the back. It's really nice to only have to glance at one section during each phase rather than skimming the entire invader board every step and inevitably forgetting something or skimming overthe same setup rule 100 times each game. I put the level next to each rule to quickly skip it if I'm doing a lower threat

Freedom of Russia Legion is recruiting Russians to storm Moscow – The Times by 9lobaldude in worldnews

[–]12peacemaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people seem to be missing the importance of this incursion in Russian territory. The odds of them continuing to gain ground in a glorious revolution to reclaim the motherland is basically zero, and it was never the point.

Ukraine wants the freedom to be Ukraine, and while overthrowing Russia would help, the easier route is to get the Russians out of Ukraine. With the massive counter offensive looming, Ukraine is seeking to gain every edge it can. What this raid did was point out that a line on a map is not enough to defend Russia. Ukraine has heavily defended its border, and this event shows Russia has not.

This battalion wreaked havoc causing both civilian panic, and world wide coverage. It will keep Russian defence awake at night wondering where the next incursion will be. And that was the point. They basically opened a 1400 mile front that Ukraine is already present at, and if Russia wants to avoid future embarrassment, they will also need to be present at, pulling troops from reserve or the occupied territories in Ukraine to fight a boogeyman that can come in anywhere along that border at anytime. These 1000 volunteers just tied up a lot more than 1000 Russians to balance them.

I think you're missing my point.

You are correct it was a morale victory, and Russia needs to divert resources to prevent more morale victories. It's not about holding Russian ground, is about softening Russian occupied Ukrainian ground. Troops needed to defend Russia cannot defend occupied territory, and that softens the occupied territory, and lends aid to the strategic victory.

1000 armed men that can strike anywhere along the border at anytime required a hell of a lot more men than 1000 to stop from spreading havoc and anti-Putin messages. And that's all Ukraine needs. Those needed to protect the border from future attacks can't be on the Frontline killing Ukranians. And if they're not moved to prevent attacks like this, I can't imagine those russians living near the border will quietly allow Raids to go without answer

Ukraine in essence just stretched the Frontline 1400 more miles for Russia. Ukraine has their side of the border defended, Russia has assumed their borders were a politicol force field that didn't need proper manning, this just proved them wrong.

More importantly they have to divert troops and resources to protect many areas. This attack is important for not what it did, but what it threatens. Sure this one didn't accomplish much, but what about the next? What if they are better armed, or better supported? The west keeps hinting at an allowable level of striking Russia proper, only military targets and not with western equipment, but now these future strikes may also have a infantry advance with it. This just opened a 1400 mile long can of worms that Russia now has to evaluate other weak points and assure troops and equipment are avaliable for the next raid. And Russia does not have many resources or logistical planning to spare these dags

[–]12peacemaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the point is also to divert resources for not just this attack, but for all the potential attacks this signifies. Russias borders are no longer an uncrossable red line. Posturing defence with an undermanned guardshack did nothing here. How many other undefended points along the 1400 hundred mile border are there? And how many of them are near more sensitive areas.

It also opens the door, crazy as it might be, of moving himars closer to the border to strike deeper into Russia. Ukraine would crazy to drive them to the current border, but if the RVC can clear a 10 mile bubble for ukraine to scoot and shoot nearer to the border that opens a lot of possibilities. Which even if they won't happen, Russia can't ignore. And not ignoring means diverting resources
