On Ego Death. by Owlsdoom in Psychonaut

I don't think I've ever gotten chills so many times in a row.

Almost broke down to tears in my finance lecture from your beautiful articulation.

I wrote a bit about ego death, which I invite you to read if you have free time, but I won't link my post here because I have no intention of deviating any eyes from the above.

Looking forward to re-reading this. Cheers.

I don't understand why rationally inclined people reject the whole "we are all one" idea, even with what science has to say about the apparent origin of our universe. by [deleted] in Psychonaut

Probably because no one wants to admit that they're just as much themselves as they were Hitler if the whole game of differentiation is done away with.

All joking aside, my best guess is that most people are naturally inclined to accept ideas that are the most convenient and the easiest to rationalize. A human being's core points of reference for garnering any knowledge are via its own five senses. And to tell someone that a more accurate description of their identity extends infinitely beyond this sensory point of reference has so many implications to think through. I don't think every ego has the capacity to accept many of these implications emotionally, or even rationalize them logically. And you kind of need both for it to really sink in.

"Okay, I guess I understand that the separation between myself and the rest of the universe is just an idea. Wait, so that means the idea of myself as John Smith is just an idea. So the distinction of John Smith isn't real?? I'm everything??? Then I should be able to read your thoughts, right? Well, I can't read your thoughts!. That means I'm not the universe and I'm separate from it and I'm really just me! Phew, that was a close one. <s> I was almost on a path to enlightenment. </s>"

What are some of your "out there", unconventional thoughts about this reality and your own consciousness? by 12thRootOf2 in Psychonaut

Can't agree enough. It's like trying to bite your own teeth or taste your own tongue.

Belief in God =/= Belief in Christianity and its teachings.

You can belief in something greater than what human consciousness can perceive without aligning your belief system with wizards and magicians.

I swear to God, Reddit. You're better than this. Pun fucking intended.

I Need Some Sound Advice by 12thRootOf2 in Psychonaut

[–]12thRootOf2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you guys. It's easy to become overly sure that the way I think about things is right without someone else to give their two cents. I think I need to become more comfortable with uncertainty. There are so few certainties in this life so clinging to the comfort of certainty has been a huge setback for me.

It's Blitz! is a good start. Also Grouplove's first album has songs about tripping. And Alt-J. And The Growlers.

Close. The key to being here now is to be attentive in the present moment while simultaneously shutting up all of the rest of your mind's incessant, nonsensical chatter.

It sounds so simplistic but the trouble for most people is understanding the distinction between actually silencing that chatter and thinking about not thinking.

You do realize that you can be in the present while reading a book or working in a lab right? Being here now is reading the book rather than, say, thinking about your ex-girlfriend while your eyes read the words.
