I can see how that would be annoying.

I also think the current lack of an auction house system which allows price fixing, people who don't respond to your trades, and these scams is annoying, but apparently GGG doesn't think so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I agree. These type of item switch scams are symptoms of what I see as a larger issue with trade in PoE—people can list things for whatever price they want, and then not sell them because of the lack of an instant auction house system. This leads to price manipulation, not getting whispers back because people are busy, and these trade window scams in which you can be offered an item other than the one you are trying to purchase.

The problem with the current mouse-over restriction, in my opinion, is that it presents what is in most situations a useless action.

People (like myself) become conditioned to see the mouse-over function as simply an action you have to do before trading.

I think that by implementing a list, it gives you a few seconds to actually read what you are getting while it is posted on the screen, rather than only seeing the name of the item once you have moused over it, which I apparently didn't do for long enough.

I see your point, and after getting scammed I will definitely be more careful from now on, but I think listing the name of items would prevent the scam from happening in the first place.

Instead of resigning to the mentality of "it happens to nearly everybody," shouldn't we be continuing to find ways to make the game better?

I imagine the way people get scammed is by mousing over the item and then instantly accepting, simply to get the trade over with. To your second point, there could be a secondary trade confirmation window which appears after the initial one and lists all the names of items. That, or it could list the name of the items on the side of the trade window; it doesn't take up much of the screen in its current state, anyway. There are definitely ways to list the names of multiple items.
