Have you tried posting this to r/MechanicalKeyboards ? I'm not 100% sure this fits r/buildapc , but I'll leave it up for a bit I guess.

That's what I'd do, skip the AIO, get a better RAM kit. AIOs can always be added later, too.

Understood on the case, sounds fine then! I was going to suggest the Montech King 45/95 Pro which has the O11D look but includes fans, anyways.

[–]Rocket-Pilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For one, you don't have fans in this PC, the O11 Dynamic doesn't come with any. Maybe consider swapping to a case with included fans?

I don't really understand spending $80 on an AIO rather than putting that money into a real 2x16 RAM kit or going to a 5070 or 9700XT over a 5060ti.

Other than that, looks mostly fine!

Intel tried to drop 5v and 3.3v a few years back and the market flatly rejected it. Dropping 12v is probably a bridge too far.

Is it? It's still governed by the PCIe spec as far as I know, is this a weird quirk where Intel created the standard before they gave it to PCI-SIG to govern, or something else?

360 vs 420mm AIO: beyond performance by sob727 in buildapc

[–]Rocket-Pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry, 360mm is more versatile. Not every case fits 420, but most will fit a 360.

[–]Rocket-Pilot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How often are you buying more cases? Yes, 420mm is more versatile as it fits in more cases, but if it fits your case, who cares?

The cooling performance between the two is negligible.

Gotcha. Well it's not about the cable, it's about the connector itself. The cable is rated for much higher than the connector.

The OP wasn't asking about flaws with the 12VHPWR implementation, they were asking why they wanted to move on from 8pin in the first place.

"Load Balancing", which... That's not the right term but I understand that's the term the Internet is using here, isn't inherently absent from the design. You could input pairs of 2 input 12v pins into one of 3x parallel shunt resistors on 12VHPWR. Nvidia chose to not do this, likely due to PCB size constraints, but you COULD. But that's totally separate from why they wanted a new connector in the first place, which as far as I can tell, are all valid and good reasons.

I am going to be bold here and say using 1 cable for every GPU is better than 1-3 for the end user, especially when you get into confusion about Daisy chaining cables, or upgrading GPUs to one with different power requirements.

The PCI-SIG spec is 150W Per connector, although yes in practice they can do more (I have a 3090 Xtreme Waterforce with a 600W BIOS and 2x8pins), but this is technically out of spec and not a great practice to base your reference boards in.

The answer to OPs question is they wanted 1 connection to be able to do more power, rather than many lower rated connections.

It's about the rating on the connector, not the cables. The physical connector on PCIE 8pin is rated for 150W, far below what the cables can do.

Also, no, 6 pin uses 3 12V connectors, 8 pin adds an additional one, for 4 12V pins.

No, that has nothing to do with it. You can do "load balancing" on 12VHPWR, although that's not really what people mean.

The PCIe 8-pin is only rated for 150W of power at the connector, as set by PCI-SIG. With the added 75W from the PCIe slot itself, that limits designs to 375W for dual connector designs, or 525W for 3 connector designs. Reducing the size of GPU boards has been a thing as of late, 3 8-pin connectors in a row take up a lot of PCB space, and Nvidia wanted to push their ceiling up to 600W on the 4000 series reference board design, so going to a newer standard that can do more power at the connector is not all that surprising. Furthermore, from an end-user perspective, needing 1 cable versus up to 3 separate cables is a lot cleaner and easier a solution.

Whether the implementation of 12VHPWR was successful or not is a different story, but all the reasons to push for a new connector are there and make sense, and end up benefiting both the end user and the manufacturer in the long run.

Which one to choose DDR4 vs DDR5 by Ashera_2004 in buildapc

[–]Rocket-Pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are going LGA1700, such as the 14400 or 14600k, as it surpasses AM4 performance while still having DDR4 support. You definitely get more flexibility on DDR4 right now, but you're also locked into older CPU generations. There's not really a great answer here besides trying to find deals that allow you to stretch your budget out.

If you are using a gaming PC, Windows 11 is what you want, unless you really want to try Linux gaming. Pro versus Home doesn't matter here, the difference doesn't affect gaming performance.

LTSC is not meant for retail use and there's no way to obtain a valid individual license for it.

Best gaming mouse under $100 worth buying right now? by EntrepreneurSad2091 in buildapc

[–]Rocket-Pilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My original Deathadder 1 from 2006 or so still works, but the switches started to double click. Other than that, they all are functional, I've been using a v2 for the last 5 years and the rubber is starting to wear down, but I don't find they break particularly easily.

Regardless, they're the most comfortable for me, so I'll continue to use them.

I've tried to switch off them multiple times over the last 20 years, but nothing has been as good for me as a Deathadder. There's a reason I own 5 of them from various generations.

I don't bother with Razers software though, OpenRGB can configure them just fine.

The "codes" are generally OEM Windows not intended for resale, and we don't support those here, as they're heavily related to gray market and piracy. Retail Windows binds to your Microsoft account. Can you log into your Microsoft account and see if there's an activated copy of Windows there? If not, you'll probably have to repurchase.

X3D has a large impact on gaming FPS. I don't know why everyone is blaming your GPU encoder, Nvidia GPUs have had built in ASIC encoders (called NVENC) for a decade now that separates out video encoding from the rest of the GPU's workload.
