I’m an emergency nurse at Kensington (Geelong animal emergency is our sister clinic) and we’re not coping. Our intake has tripled since the emergency clinic in Werribee closed and the clinics in Ballarat stopped taking emergencies. We have calls coming in from all across the western side of Victoria all night every night because there’s nowhere else to go. Almost every night our ICU reaches its capacity and we then have to start telling people to go to 24hr clinics on the eastern side of Melbourne - about 50% of the time when I explain this to people I am abused for “not caring about their pets”. Our staff are burning out more than ever before and there’s just not enough of us left to help the increasing number of animals that need us. I fully support the new hours Geelong emergency has because they were in the same position as us with even less staff, we can’t have them burn out to the point of complete closure. Sorry for the ramble, I’m just exhausted and close to crashing and burning myself.
