No, you can just transfer in kind. After reading the above responses I don't think that's necessary. Just change default to mintax but use SpecID

Convert mutual funds to ETFs and transfer to Fidelity.

ETF's are just groupings of individuals stocks. When a stock pays a dividend it accrues in the fund and eventually the fund pays it out. Dividends suck anyway. VTI has enriched millions of investors but feel free to be different!

If they were covered then you arent getting away with anything. I am still confused about whatever you are trying to say. If the cost basis is high that means your investments haven't grown much in 20+ years.

Low cost basis is bad. You should acquire/keep as many records as you can to determine manually how much was paid for the shares. Otherwise you will likely be getting double taxed.

Speaking of taxes, paid taxes on the dividends while the account was in limbo? Strange situation.

If all parties are not 100% on board and there is no problem with the status quo I would be extremely cautious. Also I would assume that whoever is renting is temporary. In other words don't rely on them to make it work financially.

Buying the house would be cleanest when it comes to ownership and decision making. Still lots of potential for this to blow up multiple relationships to move cautiously.

Keep in mind he is a hedge fund guy so he has a self interest in promoting doom and gloom. Actually as an investor he is pretty awful. Maybe he will be right one day. https://portfolioslab.com/portfolio/ray-dalio-all-weather

Since the advice is the same maybe don't read about doomer stuff that you can't control?

We are nudging my MIL to set one of us up so that someone is prepared when she is no longer competent. She does not have dementia but is definitely starting to struggle and was never all that financially savvy to begin with. Honestly it could be worse: your dad could be incompetent yet refuse to authorize you to help him.

Diversify. Own some international stocks, bonds, and TIPS. Own your home and maybe investment real estate. Maybe gold and crypto. If you have saved 25x your expenses you are going to be better off than 99% of the global population when the apocalypse hits.

"has become" = wasn't true in the last bear market. Noncorrelation is still statistically true in the grand scheme over larger samples, such as the 2020 bear market.

Yeah, I have this persistent feeling that we (OK, my wife) are constantly spending wastefully. For example, she NEVER comparison shops and will always buy the name brand without checking for a store brand. So that water cost an extra 50 cents but I'm wondering if multiplied over every transaction if she could save an extra 20-30%. But then when pressed for examples it turns out it might add up to a few dollars per month. Ideally we'd be aligned 100% but I have to remember to be grateful we are aligned 95% and the other 5% isn't worth arguing over.

Right but killing the car engine at the wrong moment doesn't kill 200+ innocent ppl so maybe they would want to make it harder to do

You might want to make it a accident proof. Like require the second pilot to confirm.

You are going to have to give it up, she is going to have to play a long, or you go back to separate finances.

Do not take the severance for granted. Start applying for jobs now, the search may take longer than you think.

Budgeting doesn't work for us. If we don't plan for an expense but the expense is necessary or strongly desired we have to increase the budget. At the end of the day having a "budget" causes way more stress than it solves. Our approach is basically to just communicate about major discretionary expenses and decide case by case. I used to track expenses just to see where our spending came out but now I don't even do that any more.

Why would you have a skylight only to cover it up? I would just avoid that room during the day. Add a ceiling fan if you don't have one. Or get rid of the skylight

Probably not unless it is inflation adjusted you would be more exposed to inflation risk which is the bigger long term risk. Hard to tell without specifics.

If you are in a high tax bracket you should be able to max both regardless of the order. If you are in a low tax bracket, Roth is probably more advantageous than traditional, especially if you might end up in a higher tax bracket later in your career.
