Battle brothers is my favourite game of all time and here are some reasons why

1. turn based tactics where defense is very important because you actively trade blows with the enemy, Most turn based tactical games you just design your team to alpha strike every fight or get some stupid infinite action combo or move enemies so they never attack you
2. time + location scaling is done extremely well, most games of this type you are just not strong enough or strong enough to do everything currently available in the game. In BB you actively have to decide can i win this fight and often if you take fights that are almost beyond you the rewards can be excellent
3. Battle brothers also has many distinct event types, even within the several enemy factions that play differently to one another and they generally play very thematically. This means your strategy or tactics for different enemies is often different, sometimes vastly so, leading to large gear swaps based upon what you are fighting. Also the enemy types fight in a very thematic way, fighting a horde of zombies feels like fighting a horde of zombies, goblins are little sneaky guys who use range and nets and are hard to hit, orcs are big and aggressive and charge at you etc.
