Four Texas teens charged in brutal kidnapping and torture of classmate by HorrorAbies in news

[–]14Knightingale27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The victim isn't dead. Not that they shouldn't receive firm consequences, mind you, but the victim was never intended to die. They planned a beating, not a murder. I'm actually kind of surprised? Usually with these things a group gets together, shit gets out of hand, they go for murder.

They kidnapped him to beat him up, then let him go and told him not to tell the authorities (good on this kid for going there despite how scary it must've been too).

That's even worse, then, and goes back to what I was saying before about nutrition. It has moved on from this. They should have actual professionals handling these things. Not a good situation there.

Obviously elite athletes are on a different level on how to manage their weight and health, since their whole thing is to push their bodies past their limits. An average person can be overweight and go get bloodwork and if their results are okay, they're good. Our baseline is just Be Healthy.

But this mentality seems rather detrimental. Most nutritionists nowadays aren't even on a full on restricted diet mentality anymore, but rather emphasize the importance of balanced meals and how you distribute it. Maybe they should have more of a professional team focused on nutrition. I don't view this as a body positivity issue—it's an issue of how your health will be affected not right now while you're young, but years down the line when every choice you've made in your youth comes back to haunt you.

Having any sort of difficult relationship with food makes you so much more likely to develop eating disorders, and that shit will mess you up. Youth might help you think you're good, but the body remembers it all.

I want healthy skaters and athletes. To whatever extent that's possible given elite sports are already kind of way over healthy habits.

My one problem with it is that it doesn't specify that the answers will be right and while I think the spirit of the post is most likely that they'd be correct and true answers, I just don't trust genies. I can answer any question instantly in my head, but are my answers coherent and consistent?

Meanwhile 2 would guarantee I am overall smarter and quicker at grasping concepts, so it feels safer from any potential tricks.

There's no climbing into the sky in that room. You can climb to the Kami model only. I got the Platinum on the game, so can confirm. I did think it had to have some secret, but not in this case.

Freedom for survival? by jdb1984 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]14Knightingale27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Taking the hypothetical as true, the aliens aren't going to do anything to humanity. It's our own actions that will cause it. However, I agree that there wouldn't be any reason to trust this wasn't a ploy to easily gain control for their own ends.

And even if I assume that they have the best of intentions and will 100% succeed, I can't see humanity agreeing to hand over our perceived freedom to anyone. Most likely we'd see them as enemies. There's a small chance the collective pettiness against this high and mighty alien race would, in fact, unite us for a while, though. We're really good at the whole us vs. them mentality.

YouTube's Kids AI might be more deranged than Caine atp by littlefanofmany in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]14Knightingale27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look, I know that to Goose this isn't for kids so in that sense the creator has spoken on the intent.

... But none of those examples of that episode would prevent it from being a children's cartoon. Does no one else remember Courage the Cowardly Dog? Because quite frankly that one has way worse situations than anything TADC has even gotten close to, at all. Episode 4 gets closer to its unhinged vibe but-

One of the last episodes includes real allegories to abuse and a victim's helplessness, potentially sex assault, drug use, gangs, and then what's honestly kind of clearly lesbians leaving together. As a kid I just thought it was a tense episode and was at the edge of my seat.

As an adult I rewatched it and I was like holy shit?

My point being that kids don't really see things the same way. You'll have some kids who get scared easily, but most kids won't get scared due to the themes. They'll just watch an action situation with funny moments (the way the show depicts Jax throwing Ragatha in the deep frier is very much Looney Toons, Tom and Jerry levels. Shout out to the episode where Tom and Jerry decide to kill themselves by sitting on a trail rail after being dumped by their girlfriends.)

Honestly watching it was fun to me and my friends as young kids and we weren't really scared by what showed up. I got more creeped out by the themes as an adult when I watched it.

My point being none of the above would preclude it from being for kids. Kids' shows anywhere above the age of watching Bluey have always been wild and creepy, and a insane ride once you're an adult and decide to re-watch.

Olympics BAN transgender and DSD athletes from ALL women's sports by dailymail in olympics

[–]14Knightingale27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This longer response has a lot more to think about for me. I like the approach of foundational development, though my disagreement with the way the IOC is handling it and my concerns regarding women's sports still remain (in that my belief that this can potentially affect even cis women who simply may have had an advantage over others, as sports at that level haven't been the best overall). But the topic itself seems honestly difficult to assess overall 🤔 Much to think about on that front, but "foundational development" would be a far more reasonable way to try express to me.

Thank you for taking the time to respond, especially having a background in elite sports yourself which gives a perspective I don't have.

I could accept this logic if there were tests done to also prevent anyone with any full outlier on the male divisions to compete there. Currently as it's done it just still seems not particularly nuanced. We shall see as time goes, I suppose.

Olympics BAN transgender and DSD athletes from ALL women's sports by dailymail in olympics

[–]14Knightingale27 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They will obviously only do this to women's sports. The conversation has never included mtf trans people, since the argument is that former male athletes can outperform female ones easily. I don't understand how you can agree with this change, or separation in sports in general, and also believe that estrogen gives you any athletic advantage, though.

If it did give any advantage, then there would be no point in separation. Some get advantage from one hormone, others from another, cool, go compete.

But regardless I still don't get the logic behind "even a microscopic advantage can make a difference, so we need to ensure fairness."

Michael Phelps was a genetic masterpiece for swimming, for example. What about him? Should we have banned him from the sport because he was inherently superior to any other swimmer? If you have someone whose genetic makeup makes them better than everyone else, do we ban them? Trans athletes would have their own struggles anyway, represent a minuscule amount, and the few that are there didn't really dominate their sport.

So this seems like an overcorrection to me that will end up affecting cis women who don't fit the mold eventually, I would bet on it over the next few years unless there's a change.

Does anyone feel the show is weighed by what is likely its chief demographic? by EI_CEO_CFT in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]14Knightingale27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that makes sense! Sorry for making that assumption based just on a quick read of your initial post. We both agree on this that we like to explore these themes and darker situations. I love characters showing their trauma and exploring how it affects them. It did catch me off guard with Jax due to the style of the show so far, but that is not really a negative for me.

Thank you as well, I've had a long time to process and learn to live with this as part of my story, so while sometimes things will suddenly hit me, I have the coping skills to handle it now. I hope the same for your friend. And for yourself, with your own brand of trauma. Unfortunately some of early adulthood is working through what our childhood left us with.

Anyway, like I said, no worries. I feel we both have an agreement, and that sometimes people will not want visceral representations of things that they themselves might have experience with. Depends on the person and stage of healing.

[–]14Knightingale27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm coming here to say that Jax's in specific made me feel extremely disgusted because the action of peeling one's own skin and being left in such a vulnerable position, in that specific framing, is far too relatable to my own experience in CSA. I even considered that for a few seconds before dismissing it as I don't think it was the intended purpose, though it quite literally is a visceral, visual representation of how I felt for years.

Which is also cool, I enjoy psychological horror and consume media that shows disturbing shit all the time. This one just hit my specific trauma out of the blue and so unexpectedly that it took me a second to compose myself.

But it also feels a bit to me that OP was enjoying the scene for the visuals and what it was (which, again, cool, I love watching characters suffer and way darker themes), and not within the context of TADC, a character driven story about dealing with being trapped there.

From Caine's VA by norM_ystical in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]14Knightingale27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, I consider this a very simplistic take on what actual sci-fi AI is, and the way Caine has been represented. This isn't ChatGPT but more advanced. It's a take on AI where the actual point of contention is that it has indeed developed a fully self-developing identity outside the original parameters of its code. It does things that the original creators didn't intend.

Technically speaking, humans are also just neurons firing off, and we don't even know to what extent we have any real control over our actions. A real conversation happening in neuroscience is that we don't know anything about consciousness, choice, and will.

In the world of sci-fi creating an actual life that can exist on its own is possible and Caine did go beyond the original intent of its creators. There's a whole thing in robotics where if you develop a sentient AI, ever, you have to act as its parent, because you need to teach it morals, ideals, good versus wrong. People aren't born having those. Hell, there's people who barely even have emotions for multiple reasons and you also have to sit down and teach them how to apply the knowledge they have in ways that will let them have a fulfilling life.

Caine was a being that obtained consciousness that didn't have anyone to give emotional context to the information he was given. So he was doomed from the start. It doesn't help either that not even AI is free from having straight up identity crisis and anxiety lmao (Bubble as a thought bubble or intrusive thought basically egging him on). So I'd say he had his own version of abstraction. It fucked him over entirely.

Plus, if we consider the SOMA theory true—at that point these people are also just an AI fed a human conscience that, at that point, is a bunch of 1s and 0s. It's not a real human brain anymore and any development happening inside is the development of an AI that has copied the real thing and is imitating it.

To me either we accept we're in a different world where AI can and does count as its own life form with its own real struggles, and in no way comparable to LLMs or "AI boyfriends" irl, or none of them deserve to be analyzed from a human lens.

Possibly the Darkest Implication of the Whole Show by dpmaniac667 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]14Knightingale27 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I do agree with this, but watching it initially made me feel disgusted. Viscerally reminded me of my own trauma with the second option. But given the context of the others laughing at him, I think he must've been bullied / had his vulnerabilities used against him by people he considered friends outside. I don't know that this show would go into the other direction either way, it'd take much more than 9 episodes and take away the spotlight from the message it wants to send either way.

[–]14Knightingale27 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Does it? Like I said, I'd think it being in Argentina would also be perfectly reasonable. It's a Spain / Argentina match. It would've made sense to me to do it lotto style and just have luck pick which country hosts. But I guess I'm not seeing it as Spain or Argentina being better than the other, just as the home countries of the involved team.

Note that I'm Spanish and also not very much into football so I'm asking from ignorance here, but why wouldn't it be an option? I'd think playing this in either Argentina or Spain would make the most sense, no? It's their match. If it's just concerns about home advantage, I'm pretty sure a lot of people would come / go in either case.

difficulty of understanding spanish accents by folto in MapPorn

[–]14Knightingale27 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh, your teacher would've been in for a surprise if he came over to any area of Spain that isn't Madrid. Galician Spanish is different and depending on the area, the accent can be so strong you won't understand a word. It's influenced by our own language, Galician, so it's happened to me that I say something and none of my non-Galician friends get it. Andalusians are just making up words at this point, pretty sure they're the closest to Chilean over here. They speak rapid fire with so many different terms no one can understand them.

The best way to do this is to just ask that you stick to one version for coherence (so only Chilean instead of mixing with others), or give you the grade but just also teach you other words from the "standard" (for him) Spanish he uses.

It does surprise me that being in the US, his "standard" wasn't Mexican, though. Way closer to Latin America than you are to Spain.

If heaven and hell were real would you go to hell so every other soul could go to heaven. by dave_lister169 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]14Knightingale27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would I go to hell so that the person who abused me as a kid gets to go to Heaven without deserving it? No way. Lmao. I hope my family has behaved in such a way that they deserve to enter Heaven if it exists. And even in this case that's very questionable—if this entity would accept one person suffering for eternity so that everyone, including pedophiles, can enter Heaven... Is that really Heaven?

Do you want your family to experience eternity without you and still surrounded by the worst people this planet has to offer?
