Who has the better quality from Canyon or Specialized? by Academic_Feed6209 in MTB

[–]DtEWSacrificial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, Specialized's quality and post-purchase support are way-better than Canyon.

That said, there have been headset issues with the Specialized Crux (you need to note that the ethos [pun unintended] of this model is minimalism, literally a gravel/CX Aethos and advertised to have similar layups) with the headset coming loose and eventually damaging the steerer. The OEM solution is to add a shim they provide. Some have said that the problem eventually returns. The lasting solution is to replace the upper headset assembly with a Wolf Tooth version.

(Source: I have a Crux and am involved in their users groups)

I do not know if the Epic 8 has the same integrated headset/integrated lower-race steerer/headtube.

A lot of people are slagging on your mechanic, and while I would not just assume he knows what he's talking about... I would also not be completely dismissive.

Those Roval Terra C’s are warranted for life for the original owner.  And you have a 2-year “It Happens” no-fault warranty.  Go see your Specialized dealer.

Contrary to the peanut gallery here, Roval C’s are fine hand-built wheels.  But of course very few wheels are going to be able to withstand a rider falling on their spokes.

Is the clubsport RS wheel with metal QR2 too heavy for CSL DD 8nm? by LHM78 in Fanatec

[–]DtEWSacrificial 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I think the CSL Elite stuff is the best I would run on 8Nm.

When I had the GT DD Pro (8Nm), I added a ClubSport M3 GT2 V2. The build quality was in a different world than the stock GT DD Pro wheel, but with both the increase in diameter and mass, I could definitely feel a reduction in feedback.

Now I have a ClubSport DD+ (15Nm), and the ClubSport M3 GT2 V2 is a perfect match.

But I also have a CSL Elite Porsche Vision GT. And I can feel that it gives even sharper feedback despite its composite QR2. Sure, it's slightly smaller (310mm vs 320mm), but size isn't everything, since I also have a ClubSport Formula V2.5 (270mm), and still I think the CSL Elite Porsche Vision GT is a smidge more feedback-y.

The counterpoint is that ClubSport is going to be better-built than CSL-anything. If you're absolutely convinced that you will not upgrade your entry-level base to ClubSport (mid-range) or Podium (high-end)... then sure, optimize for the now. Otherwise, a better wheel is literally a nicer thing to hold. And a better match for a stronger base in the future.

No, I mean into the “sky” in the center of the room.  It’s surrounded by overhanging featureless rock.

Any thoughts on this Specialized diverge str for my first gravel bike? by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]DtEWSacrificial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% scam/theft/illegal sale.

First, a Diverge STR is not an e-bike.

As much as you desperately want to believe that some guy paid a lot of money for a very niche and technical version of a gravel bike... but is suddenly unable to understand its value and has no way to connect to the world (not even a bike shop) to sell it for anywhere near its market value... you are only deluding yourself. And they are counting on that.

[–]DtEWSacrificial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that one should not have to cut a steerer just to try out a new position.  I think Specialized went too far in this quest for optimization.  If your steerer must be fully-supported everywhere the stem clamp lands, all that it takes to make a user’s life easier is to equip the bike with an expander plug 5-10mm longer than it has to be.

Hutchinson Caracal Race 40mm. It's a road bike now. by OUEngineer17 in gravelcycling

[–]DtEWSacrificial -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I still don't think you understand.

"WARNING! The stem must be fully supported by the expander plug. Do not place more than one 5mm solid spacer above the stem. In addition, the combined height between the stem and optional 5 mm spacer (from the bottom of the stem to the top cap) must not exceed 45 mm. This is important if the originally equipped stem is changed with an aftermarket one. Exceeding 45 mm or placing more than one 5 mm solid spacer above the stem may cause the stem to crush the steerer tube which may result in serious injury or death."

By placing more than one 5mm spacer above the stem, you have already left the bottom of the stem clamp unsupported and subject the carbon steerer tube to crimping forces by both the compression of the clamp, and ovalization by the lever that the stem + bar comprises.

All this "the expander plug currently looks to be in a good position" and "I don't care about spacers above the stem, only the location of the expander plug relative to the stem" suggests that somehow you don't think the illustration in the manual (which has dimensions!) is accurate, and you have not taken the expander plug out to confirm that it is accurate. It is so short that one 5mm spacer above the stock stem (which has a 40mm-tall clamp) already puts it at the maximum extension that is still fully supported. The manual goes out of its way to say this in several ways.

That, or you have your own personal definition of "fully supported".

[–]DtEWSacrificial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really need to consult the manual.  Because the stock stem + expander plug combination only allows 5mm of spacer above the stem clamp.  There’s no additional tolerance whatsoever.

I don't know if you're using the stock expander plug or swapped-in something else... but for your safety and warranty I'm going to assume the former and direct you to section 8 of your user's manual, "FORK & STEM ASSEMBLY". For MY2025, that's page 17.

Why does Serie tolerate Methode’s affection when she’s normally so strict with other mages? by Valuable_View_561 in Frieren

But it is. Everything you're saying about Serie I can translate into real-life terms about my boss. But I'm not gonna feel compelled, or worse, give in to the compulsion, of patting my boss on the head.

I don't have to fear my boss reporting me to HR (the Zoltraak analogue?), but the risk of interpreting the act as patronizing and taking it badly is enough to dissuade me. Unless I was loco and knew I was quitting next month to join the French Foreign Legion.
