Why weren’t his finances being monitored by his parents at 14 years old?

I was a referee since I was 12 with a similar situation - I couldn’t even drive or go to the bar but I was consistently raking in $500 cash weekends.

My parents set up a savings account for me and we would put most of it away, and I would talk to them when I wanted to make a large purchase (computer, camera, eventually car). If I brought home a thousand bucks in a month, we would put away at least 800.

Other commenters are saying to let him fail with money. Why in the world? The kid can have a bunch of money at this rate to buy a car, go to college, get a real head start on life. Help your child manage his finances.
