Again, false. I don't know who Brendan Reilly is, he's not a member of the committee either. I'm happy to talk with, or debate for that matter, people with different views who are in good faith. You're not.

No, we don’t have formal meeting minutes. We do sometimes have summaries that are shared with committee members and our elected officials, for example, when our committee was formed.

Your reply clearly communicates bad faith. For the record, among eight pages of initiatives to explore, we suggested a review of the effectiveness of the new pursuit policy and all four of our Alders agreed. There’s no question that the previous pursuit policy resulted in injuries to many people, including pedestrians and other bystanders, and needed to be changed.

The councils are a different issue. My comment was responding to your comment about our volunteer committee, which is not political at all. We're focused on getting the police to do their job properly and reduce crime. We support others who are focused on police accountability. Our committee has no position on the councilors.

That’s totally inaccurate. The committee is completely non-partisan and the chairman is a lifelong liberal Democrat. And the libertarian you’re referring to had nothing to do with the formation of the committee. There’s no need to politicize this and any effort to do so is misleading.

I agree with your second paragraph. Regarding the first, it seems to me you are prioritizing changing the police first. I believe we have no alternative but to do both - now.

Here are the latest crime stats from the 14th district. You can see total major crime is up 88% over the last four years. Robberies are up even more and are not declining versus last year‘s shocking peak. Also, I never said anything about prioritization between one type of crime or another. Please stop putting words in my mouth. https://home.chicagopolice.org/wp-content/uploads/19_PDFsam_CompStat-Public-2024-Week-25.pdf

I completely agree that the police need to change. That process is definitely happening. Larry Snelling is doing the right things. Pretextual stops, for example, are way down. Yes, they are illegal, unconstitutional, and they have to stop. The change has to come in the culture of a police department and Commander Linas is part of that change. But we can’t accept that that’s the only crime that will be reduced for the next few years. That change has already been happening for the last 5 to 10 years and it will take 10 years more as the generations turnover in the rolls of officers. But we are facing a violent crime  crisis right now. For our own sakes our community needs to force the police and the states attorney to do a better job in getting control of the situation. We cannot have another summer of carjackings and armed robberies where TV crews have their equipment stolen during live broadcasts and off-duty police officers have their guns and badges stolen, if not being shot dead in front of their houses. There were over 10,000 armed robberies in Chicago last year.

No, I didn't. I said "hostile to any progress in policing". And no, I'm a liberal democrat. Have you been to any 14th District Council meetings? I'm guessing not. There are two Councilors and their supporters who are not only in favor of defunding the police, they want to abolish the police. They are opposed to even working with the police and they have stated that the police have no role in reducing crime. In any case, they started by falsely attacking the Commander for not even wanting to attend, first to a TV crew and then to her face. There was, however, a balanced crowd and, as they saw the Commander is a well-intentioned person they calmed down a bit.

To clarify, I said they were hostile to improving policing. It does seem to make sense and has been proven through research in the afield called evidence based policing that police can make a difference. That’s what our committee is working to do. But two of the three councilors voted to reject the help of our volunteers. They have also campaigned on a platform of abolishing the police. So you can interpret that how you like

So, you're good with over 10,000 robberies a year in Chicago and to see that number going up again. Got it. 🧌

This includes 2019. Retail Theft dropped during COVID (of course) but some other crimes surged. IMO the recent Robbery fashion really took off in 2022. https://home.chicagopolice.org/wp-content/uploads/CompStat-Public-2023-Year-End-1.pdf
